Doin the front end Upper control arm on my 94 MArk. PITA anyway, the bolt that is on the driver side upper control arm, I can not seem to get it to come out. It is loose but when I pull it there is a piece connected to the strut that is in the way, the top pf the piece is square and it is stoppin me from getting the xcontrol arm out.

When I changed my upper control arms I left my struts in. I never had a problem, just a little tight.:D

The first time I did this job, I had a hard time too.

Unbolt the master cylinder, and use an 18mm wrench to remove the UCA bolt.

Here what I did. That cap on the bolt by the strut. Break it off. You don't need it. Then you can put a ratchet on the bolt and an 18mm wrench on the nut. Works best if you have two people.

I understand what the problem is now.

You could just remove the solenoid from the air-bag. It will deflate a bit and give you a little more wiggle-room.

i change uppers all the time in my shop for customers on these cars i never took the master off the booster. you can easily get a wrench on the nut back there, if you pry the flag tab off the head of the bolt inside the wheel well, you can use a 15 mm socket to break the bolt loose and just use the wrench to hold the nut, you dont have to turn the nut since there isnt much room on the back of the strut tower. its easy, then just put the nut back on by hand on the back, put the wrench back on it, and tighten the bolt again from inside the wheel well. driverside upper is a 7 minute job for me, once you do one, you'll see how easy it really is.
