02 sensor time

If I recall correctly I used an open end wrench to get my o2 sensor out, once it broke loose I ran it out pretty easy, but I don't live up north in the land of salt. It is a PITA, I'm definitely glad that I didn't have to drop the exhaust on mine because looking at most of the bolts they look like crap. Here's a pic of mine on the drivers side.

did you go through the bottom or top with the open ended wrench? yea mines rusty too, i still dont see how you got 22m wrench to maneauver in there to break it, but ill give it a try and get back to you with some pictures!
 
i also went to sears today to buy a 22m crows feet, and they didnt have it. they had some neat ratchet swivel wrenches but none that fit the correct size of the 02 sensor 22mm...

any word on the sizes of the pigtails? ones longer than the other? or are they both the same size? because there two different o2 sensors listed for our cars - ones got a longer wire pig tail than the other...
 
The drivers side uses the short pigtail. Its been about 4 months since I did mine but it seems like I got to everything from the bottom.

i got a tool similar to this from autzone but its got a handle attatched to it that swivels, i can get it on there, but there is no room to turn it anywhere. Are you telling me you did this both in an hour with out dropping the exhaust?

i see that this would be easy if the tool had a swivel and ratchet attatched to it - but theres no way you can just use the autozone 22m 02 sensor tool with a gen 1, with out dropping the exhaust... believe me i was under the car with the tool flipping out.

gotta go 22m crows foot swivel and extension with ratched while using a mapp torch to hit up the bung, its going to be nice out tomorrow so i cant wait to mess with the mapp torch.

btw anyone know any local tool or parts store that carrys that tool - or even a 22m crows foot? i cant find it anywhere.

again also for the drivers side, did you go throgh the top or bottom, because the cat on the drivers side from the bottom has some wierd pipe with a big nut coming off of it going towards the engine that gets in the way and also the steering knuckle - passenger side looks easier as there is not as much stuff in the way. but its tight and i could barely get that autozone tool on there, and when i did - again no way to untorque it because the handle hits stuff - NEED A RATCHET DEVICE. So the crows foot or that tool above is absolutly neccessary.

did not drop exhaust at all
used above tool and a couple extensions and i think a wobble adapter,

drivers side i remember going at it opposite of what i was thinking i needed to do,i cant remember which way but on one side of the car i had the tool right side up and on the other side i had it upside down,if anyone can understand that,
i had a few arm scrapes and i remember thinking ,wow atleast these old sensors werent seized,they were very tight,but once the turned the spun out hand loose.


i think having some kind of exntension/swively thing on there would take up too much room, just the tool and an extension i had the wobbly down closer to the ground at one point,

barely any room up near the cats/exhaust for anything else.

i hope this makes sense when you read it,

wish i could explain better,

only thing i can say is i know how it went for me.

that tool does not work with the exhaut in place, not enough room. gotta go with the crows foot...

i rented it thought ide have em in and out, wrong! gotta buy that summit tool or find a 22mm crows foot, which i can't seem to find any around me and we have lowes home depot sears harbor freight etc. they all have sets that go up to 19 - thats it.

You keep saying that it can't be changed with the exhaust in place while a half dozen people on here have told you that they have performed the task that you deem impossible. Maybe the "Tool" isn't the problem. Do you know a good mechanic?
 
AbrahamLincoln. I got the same tool from autozone, I could get it on there too but there was no room to work it, even with a set of adapters. Eventually how I got the sensor loose was to put that socket on there, then hit the end of it with a small hammer. That knocked it loose and I was able to twist it out with my hands.


Try doing that, I tried everything else, with tons of different adapter + extender + flex adapter setups, and nothing else worked.
 
did you heat up the bolts? or did you run your car really hot then use the tool? All you used was the tool and a hammer? I mean ill give it another try, but it just seemd next to impossible. - cuz when the socket is on the passenger side for instance, you almost have to have the handle completely down - im assuming we're talking about the same tool right?

you used this tool, alone, plus a hammer? on a gen 1 on both driver and passenger side 02 sensors? with out dropping the exhaust what so ever? i mean ill try that seems like a way to do it, if its not seized... im gonna go try right now, assuming all i need is this tool and a hammer.

plus I still don't know about the pigtails, since they list two different. I got the two with the short pigtail, someone said the drivers side is a short pigtail - is the passenger longer?

were talking about the autozone tool, i already ordered the one from summit.
 
Sorry, I didnt read your post all the way. I used that black crows foot socket that you posted a picture of, it came in a kit from autozone or murrays. You should try around and see if you can find that one because its what worked for me in the end.
I got fed up, so I took the extension out of that socket, but left the socket on the O2 sensor, with the little handle part (where the extension goes) out where I could hit it to turn counterclockwise (or what ever way you turn to loosen it). With my left hand I held the socket on the O2 sensor, and with my right I worked the small hammer up and started hammering on the end of the socket to turn it and it worked.

This was on the passenger side. I had had someone else do the driverside for me earlier, but I believe that I could have done the same thing had I figured it out then.

Also, on the passenger side, the pipe is bolted to the headers above the sensor, so you can disconnect it (sort of) from the headers and this will give you a little bit more room to play with, but not much. I don't remember if I did this before getting the sensor out or after to help me plug the new one in, but its worth a try.

btw heres the tool in action -it just barely breaks the 02 sensor... the hardest part of the job was the drivers side connector.

car rips now, I mean rips - the 02's i got were a good 30% bigger than the stock ones - when i gun it - it just rips right through the tires and hauls some serious - can't wait to get my tune back, it should be another week. God knows those 02's were def shot... i dont see what a module could have been doing when it was probably getting no and or a bogus signal from the 02.
 
Glad you got it sussed! (must add these to my very long 'to do' list)

This is why maintenace items and a full tune up should be done BEFORE starting any performance mods. (people often don't realize how big a difference a full tune up can make)
 
Whew, I feel better don't you? I told you the biggest PITA of the job would be the connector, anyways congrats on getting that sucker changed out, feels pretty good when you finish a PITA job like that huh?
 
yea it does... thanks for the motivation - its not the "tool"! hey but if those had been seized, that tool wouldnt have done jack - cuz you can just barely break them with the ammount of space. but your right, once you break em you can just use your hands.

Yup, looks just like mine did, haven't had a CEL since I changed mine and I think the MPG picked up also. Didn't mean to rag on you, sometimes you have to be tenacious as hell on these cars til you find something that works.

Thanks for the offer but I think I can handle it ;)
We have snow today I am not in a big hurry to bring it out yet unless my paint guy calls and wants it because it IS getting painted this spring :D
