03+ Limited Slip Project

So your driveshaft from the Gen2 worked with no trouble? So all we need are the Gen1 Diff housing and the Axles to make this work? And of cousre the 8.8 Trackloc.

I'll let 02V8Sport answer your question for sure...but. ILLS confirmed the 8.8 LSD fitting into the Gen1 carrier awhile back in another thread, leaving only if just the Gen1 axles were needed to complete the swap into the Gen2 car. Driveshafts are the same. This is what 02V8Sport has now confirmed.

FYI what I did to my car is totally different. Mine required driveshaft modification. I have the entire MarkVIII/Cobra carrier in my car. I think with several different swaps going on its getting a little mixed up.

Correct! GEN2 cars only need the GEN1 carrier, GEN1 axles, and a Trakloc unit and some shims. The rest just bolts right up.

There you go.

I'm just saying if you have a Gen2 and want a LSD, do it. The Gen1 parts are easy to find and swapping the axles isn't a big deal. Looking at the Gen2 insides there is not likely a easy way to LSD it.

Jason is correct! You have to remove the axles anyway to get the old diff out, so you are not doing any additional work.

Thank you very much!! Now I know what to start looking for in the local and ebay. Thank you again!!

Actually we disconnected the upper arm from the IRS frame and the spindle from the lower arm...never touched the axle nut. Also the diff will come out undoing just one side.:D We did the passenger side.

But anyways my point was just that axles shouldn't stop you from the swap in a Gen2.

One last stupid question, and I assume you would have noted it in these replies, but I will ask anyway...The frame brackets were the same, as well? Everything mated up, bracket-wise?

Let me see if I get this. I don't need to change out the axles to the Gen1, I can use the Gen2 Axles?

Yes, its all the same mounting, brackets,etc...

You dirty dog! I was thinking of a way to do it w/o removing those 36mm axle nuts. Thanks for the idea ;)

LOL, NOOOOOOO

You need the Gen1 axles.

When I said just the axles souldn't stop you I mean cause they are easy to swap...not that they dont need to be.

I'm pursuing the LSD into the GEN II carrier. I have the traclok in my possession, I just need to pull the carrier from my car and take the two in. We'll find out if it's do-able or not. I'm not holding my breath on this one though.

It could very well be doable. Just because the Gen2 differential case mounts differently inside the Gen2 carrier doesn't mean that the size is not similar enough to make the 8.8" LSD work. I will not be holding my breath on this one either.

Gladly I have the tester Gen1 carrier here sitting with a 8.8" open diff. Now if only I had a Gen1 diff cover.... Hmmmm I wonder who I would have to talk to about getting one of those........:p ;)
