My alternator works fine however when it's cold in the morning & I start the car it has a high pitched bad bearing sound to it. I want to take it apart & either lube or replace the bearings.

Is it as simple as removing the front nut & then the bolts that hold the housings together? I know about the brushes needing to be held in with a paper clip to put it back togeter, Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Thanks, Rich

Taint that easy McGee. They are sealed bearings, and pressed into place. My local alt shop (the one that I trust) charges $40 for new bearings installed.

also that noise is more than likely not the alt, tak a stethescope or wrench up to everything upfront to diognose, i did my water pump alt 3 times idler pulley and ps pump, still had that god foresaken noise on a cold startin morn

I did use the stethoscope & thats how I pin pointed the alt.

So I guess I would have to take it to a rebuild shop for the bearings to be pressed in? Oh well I gotta do something cause it's driving me nuts.

Get a new one from Max I have been down the rebuild road before if a sealed bearing is starting to go the rest of the alt is not too far behind.

Mine makes that noise 2, and it def sounds like it is coming from the Alternator, and I don't want to get a new one yet, I was going to have it rebuilt and for more handle more amps, but well see what happens..

They aren't that hard to pull apart and replace the bearings. I've done a few, and need to do my vic now.

isn't true that ford only sells remaned units? That's what I was told on the other forums. I am not about to even put a Autozone unit on my car either! Way too many issues in the past with my mustangs & Autozone. They pretty much suck & the majority of the employees are tards with the exception of the very rare few.

Why would the alt be soon to follow & fail just because the bearings are dry & making noise? Doesn't make sense to me.

Yep it will be a reman, "I said new but its not my bad "Max will give you a good price, call him he gives a discount to members.
The bearings are sealed IMHO if they are shot the Alt is not too far behind The sealed bearing should be the last thing to go to hell.
These cars are hard on the ALt. it sits on top of all the heat, plus a mark needs the charging system to be in tip top shape or you will be stranded.

I have been down the rebuild road before just to have to call Max later.
Do what you want.

Thanks for the advice. I would really like a new one if I'm going to shell out that kind of $$$.

That 12/12 warranty alt from ford is a P/N F6LY-10V346-ARM and (knock on wood) have not had a concern with one yet. Retail is $209.07 and LVC is $163.07 plus 60.00 core and frt. This the the gen2 alt. There is a cobra one for slightly more but you would have to extend the harness.

for what it's worth, I bought a 200 amp from a seller on ebay, great feedback, 100% and 28,000+, got it quick (4 days) $211 with shipping, says (and looks) brand new, no core charge, rated at 105 amps at idle and 200 amps at 1200 RPM-also a 1 year warranry, they do suggest you run a 4ag wire to the battery or starter -here is the link:
