My trans has been shifting kind of har around 25 miles per hour and sometimes around 40 miles per hour... I read some where on this board that it could be n accumulator.

How much does it cost to have the 1-2 or the 3-4 accumulator in the transmission replaced? would it better to just get another trans or have my current one rebuilt?

If it's determined that the accumulator is broken, it's far less expensive to simply change the part.

Basically, the accumulator is a spring. The process of replacing it is messy, but not particularly difficult. A rebuild will cost much, much more in parts or labor.

thanks for the info....ill try the the accumulator(s) first...hopefully that will fix the hard shifting.

can anyone who has had an accumulator(s) replaced tell me how much i can expect to pay?

if you can do it yourself, cost will be parts only, about 60 bucks for the two springs and new accumulator piston. its not hard to change, but you do have to drop the trans pan, which can be messy, then you have to drop the accumulator, which gives you another little soaking of fluid! if a shop was to do it, probably between 80-140 , thats depending on if they have to put fluid back in the trans, or if you supply them with new fluid, but alot of shops wont take your supplied parts , they want to sell you their own stuff.

I think i ll let the shop do it...140 is a lot cheaper than 1200 to have the trans rebuilt. hopefully that will sto p the hard shifts

not hard to do at all and you have all the part #s now-is messy, but there are write ups here and on other forums to do this-changing the fluid to Mercon 5 will add another 50 spot, if you do it you'll know it was done right

yeah if i had a the righttools i wouldnt mind taking a crack at it.
so mercon 5 is the best fluid to use?

Yes you want to use Mercon 5. Make sure they also drain the Torque convertor. This will require them to supply about 14 qts of Mercon 5 at about $5.00 a qt.

Also note that you should get a new transmision filter as well, that wasn't on Max's list.

Note that Max also gave you the LVC price for the FoMoCo parts, and your garage may not. Either case I would ask if it is OK for you to supply parts and they labor only. This will adleast be some assurance the parts got changed (want old ones back). Shops I deal with have no problem with this.

Don't forget the Valve body gaskets he's mentioned. You don't want to get hung up for lack of those. I bought them locally and there were only a few in town, I got them all.

ok guys heres the situation now! i posted a comment about a tranny that i had the not purchased yet.well i came across another one from ebay ill have in my possession in about a week it have 80,ooo miles on it now scince its out of a 1998 lincoln mark VIII what all shouls i do i already plan on doing the 1-2 acum springs and 2-3 acum as well but far as a rebuild and HP that i plan on doing what should i do honestly PLEASE HELP NO BULL(*&)

The 98+ trannys already have the upgraded parts. As long as everything else inside is ok (hard to tell), then you should be good to go.

Like k9t8m said, 98 and up fords allredy have the updated piston's and the insides (New) are good for around 340hp at the crank . You will need to rebuild to go any higher. I do know some tranny shop's will pull the inside of the rotating assy out and inspect the cluches and every thing for less then a $100.00 .

thank you so much thats what i wanted to hear ttyl to you all after i receive the transmission
