Engine oil

While we're on the subject... I had an 88 Saleen with a stock 5.0. Had 40,000 on it when I got it in 1995. Had 318,000 on it when it was stolen in 2005. I ran Mobil 1 15w-50 full syn for the life of the car. Changed the oil one time in ten years. It was burning a quart every 1000-1200 miles when it was stolen. Original engine, no mods or power adders, and no smoking. Car ran like a bat out of hell and oil pressure was consistent mid-range... So... either I was very lucky, 5.0's are bulletproof, synthetic oil changes are bull:q:q:q:q, or a quart every 1200 miles was oil change enough for that car.

No, you don't. You only need to use oil that meets the standards laid out in the Owner's Guide (see the Tech Section if you don't have TFM to R); most of use choose to run synthetics because it's cheap insurance, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Synthetic oils (particularly true synthetics like Mobil1 and Amsoil) can survive longer in the crankcase because they do not deteriorate as badly over short time spans as dino juice does; the Windsor V8s were relatively bulletproof; and losing a quart over 1200 miles from a 5-quart oiling system is pretty close to changing your oil every 6,000 miles...

I believe you, especially when you placed a new, fresh quart in every 1200 miles. Somewhat suprising that the oil filter never clogged, but then again, with a fresh quart of oil going through it every 1200 miles, Im not suprised.

Once I hit 100k miles (in about 6 months) I plan to go from 10k mile synthetic oil intervals to 15k synthetic oil intervals. And based upon my experience, Im fully confident I can hit 150k miles with no problem. Thats when I plan to sell it anyways.

Oh yeah..I switch to WalMart brand SynTec full synthetic 5w-30 some time ago. Far cheaper than Mobil one, and has the same specs on the label.
 
this walmart brand appears to be popular. i could only find 2 quarts left on the shelf therefore i went with the mobil 1
 
I have been using Castrol Syntech for years in my Wife's Mountaineer with the 4.6 V8 (5-20 wt.) and in the LS V6 since I got her. Also using the motorcraft filter in both. I change the oil in the LS every 4000 miles and in the Mountaineer every 5000 miles. The oil looks dark after every change. My LS uses about 7.9 qts of oil also. I buy the Castrol in the 5 qt bottle, it's cheaper than by the qt bottle. one more note if are going to be using other than recommended weight oil in your car (a heavier weight) than expect your gas mileage to go down. It takes more power to move this around in the crankcase.
 
My 2004 LS V-8 came with a 2003 booklet for some unknown reason, possibly it has something to do with the fact that it was a dealer test drive vehicle at first. At any rate, the booklet states Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil (US) or Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Super Premium Motor Oil (Canada). 6.9 quarts for the V-6 and 6.5 quarts for the V-8.

Two things. If you are putting 7.9 quarts into the crankcase, you are overfilling by almost 1.5 quarts. This isnt helpful for the engine/seals.

Additionally, one cant go by the dark look of oil in estimating how much life it has left. Brand new oil can get dark in less than a day just due to the heating/cooling cycle
 
I have been using the SYNTEC 5-20 with a quart of the Lucus Synthetic every 7K, keeps the engine running extremely smooth and actually increased my milage by 3 mpg in town and 6 on the highway..
 
Mobil 1 5W20 full synthetic

I only use Mobil 1 5W20 full synthetic in my Town Car but I was thinking about switching to Royal Purple 5W20 full synthetic because I've heard it's "the best"?

Both are great oils; if Royal Purple was "the best” then everyone would be using it exclusively, which just isn’t the case. The interval between oil change and any filter but Fram is important depending on your particular driving habit and environment.

Well I would hope everyone knows to change their oil.....by "the best" I guess I meant to ask "Is Royal Purple better than Mobil 1?"

I guess its personal preference, If you want one the the best known "high quality" motor oils. Motul is known the be at the top. However, at 15 bucks a quart, it gets pricey. I use motul in all of my race cars.

quick question guys, i wanted to change my oil and i went to pep boys and he i asked him if 5w-30 he said yeah but he said that's for newer cars, and he told me 10w-30 is better for higher miled cars (as mine is) so i listened to him. it's in the car right now and now i'm not sure if that will hurt the car. should i drain it and go with the 5w-30 instead? it's royal purple and it'll be expensive to drain and put the other one. please reply asap as i don't have regular internet connection any longer but am at one for about an hour. thanks
 
I had a 1992 ford F150 inline 6. I ran royal purple in that since it had 100 000miles on it. Sold it 7 years later with 220 000 miles never burned up oil never smoked. Did oil changes every 3000. Never tried mobil one but will always use royal purple. Im happy with it. Plus I don't like to switch after I start using one brand and type.

I now have 2 lincoln ls and run 10w-30 royal purple in both. 60 dollar oil changes I think pay off. I don't want them to break down. Like someone said before cheap insurance.They run great. Haven't had any problems.

But I also have a 97 avenger and a 94 intrepid I use valvoline high milage oil in them they don't smoke or lose oil. They run great. Haven't had any problems.
 
thanks a lot LS Monk, i was scared that i might mess something up. and by the way i had a tough time taking out that oil filter with just my hands, had to buy an actual oil filter remover part. all in all i spent about 70 bucks including filter (is there a fram one for the ls?), and five for the oil remover part. haven't ran the car but i will going to work. thanks again LS Monk

Friends don’t let friends use Fram oil filters.
You can find better filters for the same price or slightly more money. Google Fram oil filters and read the horror stories.

I use Fram often..never had an issue. Then again, I'm not hung up on brand names.

Even with all the problems of the other Fram filters, this one is not too bad. It has a heavier filter element with more surface area, a silicone anti-drainback valve, the cheap pressure relief valve, but with a clever integral screen to keep out large particles, and enough inlet holes for good flow. The only other drawback to this filter is that it is capped on each end with cardboard instead of metal. Looking in through the center outlet does not reveal any paper end caps, but they are there. I personally do not use this filter, but the design didn't have enough bad qualities to cause me to tell others to avoid it.

Just get Ford Motorcraft filters...they're inexpensive. I think 10w30 or is too high if the manufacturer is recommending 5w30.

True. The 10w30 will NOT flow as well and protect critical parts (especially at colder temps and at startup, which is when most engine wear occurs) as a 5w-30.
 
Well I figured the 10w-30 was better because I did the switch to synthetic over 60000. So I figured that the synthetic 10w-30 was the same as 5w-30 regular oil. If I am wrong please someone let me know and I will switch to 5w-30.
I have heard that fram filters are just a pile of crap with a brand name. I do use them only because I bought 10 for a very cheap price but after there gone then there gone for good.

The manufacturer of your engine recommends either 5w-30 or 5w-20. The manufacturer doesnt state that you change viscosity at certain mileages. You should go with what Ford recommends.

As far as Fram, I've read bad things and good things. I've used Motorcraft, Purolator, and Fram (whichever was on sale or available at the time) since 1999 on my V6 LS and my current V8 LSE. I've never had any issues with any of those filters at anytime. If you belive certain websites, using a Fram will cause cancer, nuclear reactors to melt down, and the moon to crash into the earth.
