03+ Intake Silencers

I removed the two large intake silencers on the 03+ engine (already have the KKM). I cut them off and to fill the empty spots and I used a thick piece of plastic and plenty of RTV Sealant. I let it dry completely before putting it back on. I've done this twice but the larger top oval shaped hole will not stay sealed. I tried sanding the plastic a little to give it a porous surface to bond to better but nothing. The smaller circle shaped hole on the bottom stays on fine its the top one. Anyone have a better/simple way to do this?

Yeah I have plenty of that. I'm going away This weekend driving a lot. I wanted to try and knock this out before I left but I'll probably end up having to just duct tape it. The engine heat won't affect the tape right? It's some heavy duty 3M. It'll hold for about 4-5 days before I can really work on this again?
 
yep, it held my intake on my 02 togther for a year and then I sold the car that way, haha
 
Gotcha thanks I'll have to just duct tape it. But when I really want to cleanly fix this, anyone know why the RTV and plastic won't hold? I'm doing it pretty carefully and pretty well letting it vulcanize completely, it just peels off. Anything else I can get at a local hardware store or pepboys to cleanly hold this together?
 
plastic usually has oil in it that wont let things adhere to it, there are certain types of plastic where its very hard to get anything to stick to it.

Usually a ACE hardware sell different shapes of plugs and oddities that a large chain like Home Depot wont have.
 
I see. I cleaned both surfaces with soap and water and then sanded them down to make them bond better but no :confused: . What do you mean by plugs? This a gap about 5x3 inches.
 
RTV is makes a nice water resistant seal but I don't think it's very strong for actually bonding things.
 
You think I'd be better off using Caulk? Will that withstand the heat. Yeah I just figured since its something really light the RTV is holding and how I put the sealant on there it'd hold. Oh well:( Any thoughts on Caulk?
 
glanga, for a hole that is 3x5, you will need to buy a sheet of plastic from a hobby shop and cut it to match your hole size and JB weld it in place. You dont want RTV and caulk getting sucked into your intake.
 
they sell JB Weld at any hardware store. Stuff is indestructible once it cures.
 
When I took them off it didn't sound louder, it just had a different sound. Less grumble more of a sporty sound.

They are pretty much large plastic blobs hanging off of your intake tube on 03+ engines. There are 3 originally. If you put a KKM that removes one automatically then you have to manually remove two if you want. If you buy the K&N intake it automatically remove all of them.
 
I did this mod back in 2003 and used a high temp epoxy to keep the covers in place. After I cut the silencers off with a Dermal, I fabricated patches from the removed plastic pieces. Once the epoxy cured I painted the seams flat black and the intake lasted over 2 years with no problems.

I didn't notice any performance change, but the sound level did improve a bit. My main reason for the mod was to enhance the look of the engine compartment, which I believe it did.

When we got our 2006 LS, I switched to the K&N T-Bird intake.

Yeah thats exactly what I am trying to do. I bought the JB Weld today. Going to try it when i get home. Looks like serious stuff.

I didn't use a dremel though....I used a hunting knife.
 
I used it once to drive my Nissan 300zxTT back hom from the race track after the nitrous backfired and blew off a chunk of my radiator out that the intake was attached to from a back fire.

That stuff is VERY strong.

Actually.... the LS is my wife's car. She just lets me hack it up on weekends.

WOW!! T-Man you are a VERY trusting man, I wont let my wife touch my car, everytime it comes back its dinged or dirty(from driving off the road or through mud puddles) I had to put her back into a truck so she could abuse it and I just got her a 07 Explorer for that kind of abuse.
 
Got any pics of the 300zxtt? I love them....so underrated.

Yeah this JB Weld looks like the business haha.
