I am trying to rotate my rotors on my 98 and my friend were wondering what is this and how do we get it off. Do we just have to but a socket big enough for it or is it some sort of special tool?

Why would you want to rotate your rotors? Do you mean TURN the rotors?

If so, do what Gman said. Just tap them with a mallet. The big 36mm nut holds the hub on the spindle. You don’t really wanna take that off for 2 reasons:

1. You don’t need to
2. You’ll need to replace it with a new nut, as you cannot reuse that nut.

When i hit it with a rubber mallet it didnt budge at all.
 
Your caliper is off right? The darn thing should come right off. Hit is all around. My guess is that its hung up on all that corrosion on the hub.
 
I should just slide right off. Is it the front or the rear?

I was still chuckling at "breaks".

That nut you seek to remove is what holds the spindle containing the 'weal' bearings. You don't want to or need to remove in order to remove the rotor.

You need to hit the rotor with a rubber hammer along the rotor surface. It is simply rusted on right now. A couple of well placed blows should do the trick.

Also, I do cryogenic rotor treatment as a side business so I know a little bit about rotors. I would advise against turning the rotors. Just go buy some new ones at Autozone. They are cheap enough to just go with new vs turning them.

If you remove that nut, you will need a new crush sleeve to reinstall the nut and it must be properly torqued to like 250lbs (IIRC) or your wheel bearing will fail prematurely.

spray some WD-40 and let it sit for awhile. then hit the hub with a hammer. try not to hit the rotor.
 
put a rag or some kind of cloth over the rotor and then hit it with the hammer.
 
Whack it hard! I replaced all 4 rotors last spring, they were all corroded and stuck on pretty good.

Since I was replacing I was able to hit with out worrying about any damage.
 
Before you put them back on hit the hub and back of the rotor with a wire wheel or scotch brite to get all the corrosion off. You could even put a little Anti-sieze on it if you wanted to.
 
Buy NEW rotors.

Hammer the old rotors like hell all over the rotor itself. Don't worry about damaging the old rotors - you have new ones.

Clean off the hub and the whole area where the old rotor came off from debrits/rust.

Clean off oil off of new rotors. Install rotors/pads/caliper.

Repeat on remaning 3 hubs.

Done! :D
 
On my friends 94 Camaro we had to take the front hubs off the car and press the rotors off with a 50 Ton shop press they were so rusted on, I love Minnesota!!
 
WOW!!!

I grew up in the cities and I have never had that problem!
