Hey all! I've been reading these forums for a while but this is my first post. I seem to have a big problem on my hands and I know you all are way more knowledgable than the local mechanics.
So here goes...
2000 Lincoln LS V8
When I got it a few years back it had a bad coil so I replaced it and it drove great for a while! I'm well informed on the COP issues these cars have. About a year ago, it popped a TPS code. P0122 I believe. So naturally for $40, I replaced it. Next day...same thing. So I took it to a general mechanic. He replaced it and cleared the code. Next day...TPS code again. Lol So I broke down and took it to Ford Dealer. Any guesses what they did? Yup replaced the sensor and cleared the code. Even though I had told them I'd done it twice already.
On the forums it talked about how misfires could cause electronic interference and throw tps sensor. It did skip occasionally but only under a load like driving in hills. It kept getting worse and worse gradually. Finally about a month ago it threw an actual cylinder misfire code in cylinder 4 of course. While I was in there I went ahead and replaced the plugs on the car etc. I cleared it out and it drove good for a day then threw the tps code again.
But it generally drove well minus the strange things one might expect from a too code. Sometimes I'd be driving 30 and it would climb to 35 or 40 on its own. It would bog and jump a bit when idle or accelerating quickly. Things that all actually point to a tps sensor.
Last week things got weird. I took it out of town and it was jacked whenever it wasn't cruising. Sounded like a diesel. When I idled even a little it would knock and stutter like a clutch in fifth gear trying to go 20 about to kill it.
I took it and got it scanned right away. It had Random misfire code, bank one running lean code, and tps code still. I thought maybe a vacuum leak. I started it and sprayed it everywhere it carb cleaner trying to find a leak, either vacuum or manifold. Nothing. Just shook and knocked terribly.
I had to get home so I thought well...I'll try driving since it seems ok cruising. About 2 hours out it started stuttering at cruising speed and check engine light started blinking. We got to the next town and it went from random misfire to multiple misfire, still lean in bank 1, tps sensor still, and cylinder 3 misfire. So I bought a coil and thought I'm an 1 1/2 from home. If I get it home I'll change cylinder 3 right away and work back from there.
I didn't make it home. About 45 miles from home it started blinking and died out on the highway. My thought then was maybe I burned out the Catalytic waiting too long. I replaced coils, did ohmmeter test on tps, and even tore it down and checked the chain secondary tensioner (which does have a hairline crack but it is still in timing by the flat parts on the camshaft.)
I'm at a total loss on my knowledge. It's starts now but knocks hard and dies quick. I did notice the oil level looks high, but it's been idle. I just had it changed right before I left on the trip and honestly it was a chain oil change place and I forgot to check the work. If lets say the idiots put too much would that cause this?
Please help. I have a family and this is our only family car right now.
