Hey all! I've been reading these forums for a while but this is my first post. I seem to have a big problem on my hands and I know you all are way more knowledgable than the local mechanics.

So here goes...

2000 Lincoln LS V8

When I got it a few years back it had a bad coil so I replaced it and it drove great for a while! I'm well informed on the COP issues these cars have. About a year ago, it popped a TPS code. P0122 I believe. So naturally for $40, I replaced it. Next day...same thing. So I took it to a general mechanic. He replaced it and cleared the code. Next day...TPS code again. Lol So I broke down and took it to Ford Dealer. Any guesses what they did? Yup replaced the sensor and cleared the code. Even though I had told them I'd done it twice already.

On the forums it talked about how misfires could cause electronic interference and throw tps sensor. It did skip occasionally but only under a load like driving in hills. It kept getting worse and worse gradually. Finally about a month ago it threw an actual cylinder misfire code in cylinder 4 of course. While I was in there I went ahead and replaced the plugs on the car etc. I cleared it out and it drove good for a day then threw the tps code again.

But it generally drove well minus the strange things one might expect from a too code. Sometimes I'd be driving 30 and it would climb to 35 or 40 on its own. It would bog and jump a bit when idle or accelerating quickly. Things that all actually point to a tps sensor.

Last week things got weird. I took it out of town and it was jacked whenever it wasn't cruising. Sounded like a diesel. When I idled even a little it would knock and stutter like a clutch in fifth gear trying to go 20 about to kill it.

I took it and got it scanned right away. It had Random misfire code, bank one running lean code, and tps code still. I thought maybe a vacuum leak. I started it and sprayed it everywhere it carb cleaner trying to find a leak, either vacuum or manifold. Nothing. Just shook and knocked terribly.

I had to get home so I thought well...I'll try driving since it seems ok cruising. About 2 hours out it started stuttering at cruising speed and check engine light started blinking. We got to the next town and it went from random misfire to multiple misfire, still lean in bank 1, tps sensor still, and cylinder 3 misfire. So I bought a coil and thought I'm an 1 1/2 from home. If I get it home I'll change cylinder 3 right away and work back from there.

I didn't make it home. About 45 miles from home it started blinking and died out on the highway. My thought then was maybe I burned out the Catalytic waiting too long. I replaced coils, did ohmmeter test on tps, and even tore it down and checked the chain secondary tensioner (which does have a hairline crack but it is still in timing by the flat parts on the camshaft.)

I'm at a total loss on my knowledge. It's starts now but knocks hard and dies quick. I did notice the oil level looks high, but it's been idle. I just had it changed right before I left on the trip and honestly it was a chain oil change place and I forgot to check the work. If lets say the idiots put too much would that cause this?

Please help. I have a family and this is our only family car right now.

#1 rule, change all coils and plugs at the same time (not one by one). #2 rule, use Motorcraft coils.
What do you mean by high oil level? Where does it come to on the stick? (Picture would be good.)
You can't just wait around for the flashing light on misfires. Any sign at all, you need to address right away.
It could be clogged cats, it could be a damaged PCM, it could be lots of things (including wiring). Have you done a compression test? How about a smoke test to look for an intake leak?

Photo is a fail. Since its new oil I can't get the pic to show where it's at and actually be able to see it. It's about a 1/4 inch past the max mark.

I haven't done compression test yet since it was late and storming I had the tow truck tow it to my house. I tried doing a smoke test off some goofy YouTube video and a cigar but nothing came out that way. Ghetto I know.

Wouldn't a bad pcm throw some kind of code? Also, quick update it's not turning over at all now. Sounds like no fuel. When I crank it's turns but there's no combustion at all.

The experience here is that it does not most of the time when it is damaged by failing coils.

... Also, quick update it's not turning over at all now. ...When I crank it's turns ...

This is confusing and contradictory. Either it turns over, or the when you crank it, it doesn't turn. Which is it?

Turn over = starter engages and turns the crankshaft over.

Are you really trying to say that while the starter turns it over, the engine does not fire up and run?

Yes that's what I'm saying sorry. The only thing that I changed in trying to diagnose it was I did rotate the motor to check the timing. The chain was very tight before I rotated it manually but was a little looser after.

Hey sorry for delayed response. I got caught with work stuff. I honestly can't remember which way I turned the harmonic balancer. Would that make a difference? I'm going to try to do a compression test as soon as I can get my hands on a gauge.

Yes.
Clockwise = good.
Counter-clockwise = bad = may damage timing chain guides and chains.

I think I'm just going to wait until my bro-in-law can come down. He's a car genius. Lol not that u aren't you just can't see it first hand and I think I'm in deeper than I hoped. I'll keep you updated. Question tho...I noticed that secondary tensioner is cracked and I couldn't see far enough down on the main chain to see what everything looked like but noticed it looked like more orange plastic parts. Are there more plastic pieces down on the chain that I could replace when we get in there. Do it all right in one shot? I'd like to get it all ordered before he comes down.

I haven't, but there are old posts on here from some who have. All of the ones that I can recall were very positive about the experience.

That was Scotty Kilmer's video on how to find a vacuum leak with a cigar. He is NOT ghetto.
