2002 ls v8 crap gas mileage



Starting at 53.0 MTE
Ending at 23.0 MTE

36 mi drive
40 min drive
60 mph

Is that normal???

The gas tank only holds 18 gallons. You stopped three times at completely empty and filled up completely in one 23 mile trip?

OR is it that you started at 56 MTE and ended at 23 MTE. You really have no idea how much gasoline you used, so you made a ridiculous guess of 53 gallons? The DTE decremented by 30 miles instead of 36 because you got better mileage for this trip than you did for the last few trips.




Normal mileage depends on your driving and should be in a range of 16 to 25 MPG. Personally, I get 19 to 20 MPG in mixed driving.

Yes, it was MTE. I made the stupid error of typing that in and not paying attention.
 
Its a couple months later, but I thought I would let John know about my cars as well for pricing. In CA, which is way overpriced, I paid $3500 for a cherry 2001 unit that was owned by an 83 year old grandma. 99900 miles on it, and the son's career is auto sales, grandpa kept all the records (handwritten each month notes) so like yours it is top value. I have put 1k in it so far, and by the time I iron out the tranny I expect another 1k. Total $5500. Trust me, if I didnt love these cars and could have afforded more I would think even that was too much. When I had to let my 2002 go 3 years ago, it was just as cherry and at 85000 miles then, couldnt even get lookie lou's at $5500.

Looks like maybe the same thing that happened to my Aerostar Eddie digital dash one time.Apparently the fuel gauge had been stuck and all of a sudden the miles remaining dropped really fast. When it said 0 miles,I just made it to a gas station.
OR maybe battery voltage is low? They say on here it is critical to have a well-charged battery in good condition or things go haywire. don-ohio (:^)
 
There are two fuel level senders in the gas tank, one on each side. It kind or looks (but not exactly) like your driver's side sender has failed. There is usually one or two codes logged for this, and there are resistance tests that you can do on the fuel senders. The driver's side one should be at about 19 ohms for empty and 160 ohms for full. (Must disconnect sender from REM before measuring resistance across the sender.)

Wait. When you say fill up, do you really mean fill-up (tank is full and won't take any more), or did you just put $15 in a nearly empty tank? If the latter, then never-mind.

You'd have to do a couple of true (complete) fill-ups and drive at least 500 miles without disconnecting the battery to get the DTE to read correctly.

Ohhh ... welp.. ok then... since the car has been sitting for years and I haven't had the monetary chance to FILL up... ill do that.

Gas is like $1.80?!?!? (should have drove an LS when it was near $4!!!)

Honestly if filling it is tough, get rid of it and get a civic or something.. ..Thats not a knock at you, just this isn't the car for you right now. A SMART/WISE person would drive something appropriate to their abilities. There was a time in my life the LS would not work, so I drove 10 year old maximas..

Oh I just say monetary chance only because I'm saving what I can to fix this cooling issue. That's all. I can actually fill the car up, I just chose not to.

However, if you're going to sell this car and buy me another one then be my guest. If not leave selling it out of the convo. Thanks.

Saying it's not a shot at me but then referring it to me ...doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
