Help im an idiot....and im new so hi! my name is cam

So it all started with changing the spark plugs....now ive managed to drop a bit into the holes in the bottom of the valve case thing, right under where the bottom cam is at on the passanger side. Ive been trying to fish it out with a magnet for about an hour now, where do those holes even go? and how bad did i just mess up my car?

thanks for all the advice ive got from this form prior to being a member. I have a 95 Mark Viii and this form has helped me keep it running for years. Im not a mechanic at all either lol thanks

Its a drain hole down to the oil pan I'm pretty sure Looking at the bare heads I have. Can you see the bit?
What kind of bit?
Drain your oil and see if it pops out.
 
dude what where you doing with a bit to change your plugs....that sucks man i hope you figure it out without messing up your engine. whatever you do...do not start the car.
 
The hole is an oil drain passage from the heads to the oil pan to allow oil to drain back to the sump.
 
Now I am just throwing this idea and I have no idea if it will work at all. Duct tape a straw to a vacuum (making sure the seal is tight) and try sucking it out instead if the magnet isn't working?!?!
 
If you can't fish it out with one of those skinny bendable rods with a magnet at the end, I'd place a decent sized magnet on the pan right by the drain plug. It might make its way to it and at the next oil change use the stick w/ magnet to fish it out through the plug. Just an idea.

Im draining the oil now and gunna try and get the magnet up there and dump some more oil down to try to flush it out. thanks for the advice guys. how it happened tho was i couldn't get the valve cover off so i thought if i took the fuel pressure regulater off i could get the like 2mm of clearance i needed.....bit fell off....and down the hole it went. like i said...im just prentending to be a mechanic lol
 
Why would you take off the valve cover to change the spark plugs?
 
its a small square bit probly not even an inch long. its the one used to take the bolts off of the fuel pressure regulater. i had to take the valve cover off tho b/c one of my spark plug holes was 1/4 full of oil so i was going to put new seals on that whole side. then the bit dropped now im screwed. Drained the oil out tho....and no bit. Is dropping the oil pan my next step? or can i run it if i put the big magnet next to the drain plug?
 
I would not start it until I retrieved that bit, someone more knowledgeable may disagree

Either way odds are its stuck in the hole and if you went to the trouble of dropping the k member to pull the pan you would find nothing.
You could try flushing the hole with the oil you drained, or try a coat hanger bent straight and poke the hole to force the bit down.

I would think if it ever did come free it will just sit on the bottom of the pan.
Highly unlikely it will ever interfere with any moving parts if it ever makes it to the oil pan.
 
back to the original cause for concern, iirc it's not unusual or a 'big' deal for there to be some oil in the plug wells? I have heard it's a big job to replace those seals. I think the stealer charges @ $1200. So maybe it only takes 2-3 hrs? :shifty:

ok so valve cover back on....new gaskets put in....new plugs in....oil out of spark plug hole....*didn't let it drop into cylinder*........new oil in...Now im looking at a diagram to get my plug wire hooked back up and its different from how they are currently hooked up on the car. The car does run like **** sometimes, but should i hook them up how they were? or go off these. its a 95 base model im dealin with.car probs 2.jpg

Thanks again for all of your help guys. i know im not good when it comes to cars, but i don't really have anyone in my family or anything that knows anything lol so u guys are my only hope!

There are certain cylinder wires that can be directly swapped between coil packs and it doesn't make a difference as the firing order is still the same at the end of the day.
 
IT RUNS AGAIN!!!!! lol Thank all of you guys so much for the knowledge.....next project...fixing the power windows...how bad could it go? lol
