Hey, was just in SoulSoak's "Beeping upon startup" thread and reading LS materials and such,

got me thinking ... What Instrumentation options are people using or not ?


It's all in the OM (Owners Manual)




MESSAGE CENTER (IF EQUIPPED) = Instrumentation

Operator Selectable features,

SETUP
Press this control for the following displays:

- Language
- Units (English/Metric)
- Auto Locks
- Easy Entry/Exit (if equipped)
- Lock Chirp (if equipped)


For instance myself I run with;

1) "Auto Locks" OFF (this I understand to be all doors auto lock when it's up to speed.)

2) "Easy Entry/Exit" (if equipped) OFF (BUT occupant preference memory set as #1 driving & #2 getting out w/ only tilt steering most upwards position)

3) "Lock Chirp" (if equipped) ON (just something about it I need the audible chirp as I'm walking away from it)


I always run Dist To Empty (DTE) on the Message center and only play with the Fuel Econ Avg when I'm bored.

and I have the "Belt Minder chime" OFF



How about you ?

Wish list: LOW FUEL LEVEL = 50 Miles, would like 10 Miles instead. (should be possible with a Tuner Tweak)

The DTE function will display LOW FUEL LEVEL and sound a tone for
one second when you have 80 km (50 miles) to empty. This tone will
sound every 10 minutes until you refuel.

2) "Easy Entry/Exit" OFF - ever since the yellow airbag wire under my seat broke years ago

3) "Lock Chirp" ON - reassurance that it's locked

4) "Fuel display" Distance to Empty - I fill up at 40 miles most of the time

5) "Belt Minder chime" ON - safety first kids!
 
yeah you got all the "Kids Safety" options enabled for very good reasons.

2) "Easy Entry/Exit" OFF - I had it on for a few months but people sitting behind me kept getting squished.

3) "Lock Chirp" ON - Reassurance that it's locked.

4) "Fuel display" Distance to Empty - Try to fill up before it hits 50.

5) "Belt Minder chime" ON - Never noticed this setting before.

I guess I'm the exception on these. I don't like extra noise if it can be avoided. When leaving the car, I almost always lock the car using the door keypad (press the last two buttons at the same time). I can see/hear the locks trigger. When I do use the remote and am unsure, I press lock twice and it chirps.
I want the seat and wheel out of the way to get my long legs in and out.
 
1) "Auto Locks" ON - Yeah, kids and just general paranoia

2) "Easy Entry/Exit" OFF - Turned this off when I had my son in a car seat behind me (it would squish him as the seat moved back). Never thought to turn it back on and now it doesn't seem to matter to me.

3) "Lock Chirp" ON

The last two I've never seen as options on my 2000 - I'll have to look for them.
 
4) Fuel is not an option on the setup menu. I think that they mean they just always leave the message center display on DTE (Distance to Empty).
I leave mine off to try to make the display last longer. My wife leaves hers on DTE and it is getting hard to read during the day (display is getting dim). Mine is still noticeably brighter. (but not as bright as the odometer display)

I leave mine off, too, but just because I don't want the visual noise. Hadn't thought about the display life angle, but it makes me happy I leave it off. Of course, I do push the message center buttons more to to display fuel info when I want it, so they'll probably break.

Easy entry on
Auto lock on
Lock chirp on - but like others, I lock the doors on panel before exiting car. My reasoning is prob different than that if the rest though... Bought my car and prev owner didn't have the remote to set unset alarm. I've since bought one but refuse to pay the dealership 120$ to program it and havnt really had the time to call someone out.
Woulda been nice to be able program this damn thing myself, without an expensive scanner. :(

DTE on miles till empty.
And I've never seen the belt reminder option anywhere on my 00

Sorry, I should actually explain, it's not in the options under the SET menu, it is however something that can be turned ON/OFF via a procedure of Handbrake, clicking the seat belt a few times, turning the headlights on and off and then a series of seat belt clicks. (think you are supposed to chew gum and rub the top of your head in a circular motion at the same time as well)

It's hidden in the OM.

for my 01 it starts on page 118 under "Seating and safety restraints"

Belt minder

The Belt Minder feature is a supplemental warning to the safety belt
warning function. This feature provides additional reminders to the
driver that the driver’s safety belt is unbuckled by intermittently
sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the
instrument cluster

Deactivating/activating the belt minder feature <-- this is to Shut up the Chime,
(the seat belt lamp on the dash still flashes for the first little bit but stops even if you are or are not wearing the belt.)



Read steps 1 - 9 thoroughly before proceeding with the deactivation/activation programming procedure.


The Belt Minder feature can be deactivated/activated by performing the following procedure:

Before following the procedure, make sure that:

- the parking brake is set
- the gearshift is in P (Park) (automatic transmission) or the neutral position (manual transmission).
- the ignition switch is in the OFF position
- all vehicle doors are closed
- the driver’s safety belt is unbuckled
- the parklamps/headlamps are in OFF position (If vehicle is equipped with Autolamps, this will not affect the procedure.)

To reduce the risk of injury, do not deactivate/activate the Belt Minder feature while driving the vehicle.



1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN (or ON) position. (DO NOT START THE ENGINE)

2. Wait until the safety belt warning light turns off. (Approximately 1–2 minutes)

- Steps 3–5 must be completed within 60 seconds or the procedure will have to be repeated.

3. Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt three times, ending with the safety belt unbuckled.

4. Turn on the parklamps/headlamps, turn off the parklamps/headlamps.

5. Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt three times, ending with the safety belt unbuckled.

- After step 5 the safety belt warning light will be turned on for three seconds.

6. Within seven seconds of the safety belt warning light turning off, buckle then unbuckle the safety belt.
- This will disable Belt Minder if it is currently enabled, or enable Belt Minder if it is currently disabled.

7. Confirmation of disabling Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light four times per second for three seconds.

8. Confirmation of enabling Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light four times per second for three seconds,
followed by three seconds with the safety belt warning light off, then followed by flashing the safety belt warning light four times
per second for three seconds again.

9. After receiving confirmation, the deactivation/activation procedure is complete.



At first try I failed, until I really yanked the E brake hard all the way up and redid the procedure.

A bit of a weather dance but it's heaven to not have to listen to the damn chime.


NOTE: Check your own Owners Manual for your year LS, I have no idea if it differs from my 01 OM nor did I check.
 
Ya know, all the member on this forum are going to be clicking like mad today trying to get the chime to go away.

I'll have to check my '05 manual to see if it's the same. I buckle unless I'm moving it around the house.

2. Doesn't matter, puter loses the steering wheel position if I open the door before it finishes moving and the seat is alt he way back anyways.

I started turning mine off but noted something today. I got the "Change A/C Filter Soon" alert today. When I scrolled through the system to reset the filter warning I noticed the warning was significantly brighter than the other status elements. When I reset the system to 100% the displayed dimmed back to the other levels. This is the first time I noticed this......
 
I have noticed that warnings don't dim down with the rest of the lights inside with the dimmer wheel. I think that the manual does mention this.
 
Low fuel warning comes on super bright until reset is pressed, then same brightness as rest of console.

This was with the lights off during the daylight.
 
Auto locks: On
Easy entry/exit: On, but all it does is move the steering wheel in or out since I sit with the seat all the way back.
Lock chirp: Off
Fuel: Distance to empty. I occasionally check my average mileage, but it doesn't move much. I sometimes reset it on long trips just to see how high I can get it.
Belt minder chime: I don't think mine beeps, but I've never changed it. If it's an option on the '03, the previous owner must have set it.

I've also noticed that my fuel/message display is a lot dimmer than the odometer. I like my dash pretty dim at night, but I sometimes wish it would be brighter during the day.

For people who use the easy entry/exit feature: Have you ever noticed that your seat, pedals or steering wheel move over time? I sit with my seat all the way back, pedals all the way forward, and steering wheel all the way back (towards me), but after about a week I find that they've moved an inch or two. This seems weird because, since the seat is already all the way back, it shouldn't move with the easy entry/exit.

Your position sensors are getting dirty.
 
1) "Auto Locks" ON - you never know

2) "Easy Entry/Exit" ON - im a big guy so the steering wheel gets outta my way

3) "Lock Chirp" ON - hit it twice for confirmation

4) "Fuel display" - dont have a message center....

5) "Belt Minder chime" OFF - dont always wear my belt on short drives

What? You can adjust the pedals?? How?
