On the freeway with the a/c on the needle points between R and O in Normal then when I get off the freeway the needle points at the bottom of R finally, after 10 to 15 mins it will settle to the half way point. At the half way point on the temp gadge is 220-225F with the a/c on. "checked with a thermometer at the overflow bottle with fan on"

OEM isn't 180. If it has the wide orifice it probably isn't the thermostat though.

my 93 is never above halfway on the temp gauge.

although, the ford gauges are not exactly precision instruments.

Mine goes above half but it takes just the right set of circumstances and it makes me think the coolant temp sensor to the PCM is faulty. With the A/C on the fans are running anyway so the temp stays good then. Usually if the A/C is off then it's cool enough outside that the temp stays good then too. BUT, if the temp outside is in just the right range where I am not using the A/C and I am in stop and go traffic, then it is possible that then cooling fan is not turning on at the right point and this causes the temp to climb higher in the normal range than it should before coming back down.

But this just doesn't happen often enough for me to bother to try to fix it.
