OK I don't have any 98 trans now or in past. I heard you take yoke put it in back of trans and turn and you hear the diode click. Where is the shift lever when turning yoke to hear clicking? Also what's up with the 2 diff 98 trans # they list for that one year? One is PKE-AD and the other is without PKE-AD? I can score PKE-AD's cheap local with low miles but not the without PKE-AD.

Ok since no one has anything to add, I found out you want the PKE-AD trans. That one has better clutches, output shaft,VB and diode.

Geez you're impatient. :p

You're right. As a matter of fact, I took a picture of the tag on the good tranny at a MarkVIII meet and it is indeed PKE-AD. It also has an OEM number on that tag which says "F8LP-7000-AA" which will also be on the Mark VIII transmissions.

BUT, neither one of those numbers will be found on the tag of my transmission because it is a 99 Crown Victoria civilian model transmission. So, does it have to be a PKE-AD?? Technically no. It just has to be 98 and newer transmission and have the correct tailshaft length and number of teeth on the output shaft. PKE-AD isn't the only transmission out there with upgraded internals. :)

I couldn't tell you which Crown Vic civilian model transmission I have, but it fit. Another nice thing about civilian model vics, almost ALWAYS elderly owners.

With the trans in drive you rotate the yoke. One way will be quite and smoth and the other you will hear the click.
If you talk to Alan at dirty dog he will tell that most 97 trans had the diode as well.

I only want to buy a MK8 trans no others. I read the 1998 non PKE-AD does not have any of the good stuff the PKE's do.

I just checked my spare 1997 trans and no diode.

Well. if it is a non PKE-AD it is not a Mark VIII transmission to begin with, so yeah. All I'm saying is that I have a 99 non PKE-AD transmission and it DOES have the good stuff. Any Crown Vic civilian model 4R70W transmission from 99 on up has the upgraded internals. (2003 it changed to 4R75W-not sure on compatability there) I only mentioned that fact so that you realize that you have a second option. And good gracious this tranny has taken a beating.

No not at all. You go under car-parts and they list the 2 different #'s for 1998's, PKE-AD and non PKE-AD. PKE-AD is a # given to MK8 only. I was not asking if PKE-AD was the ONLY upgraded 4R70W. I was making sure the PKE-AD is the only one with all the upgrades from a mk8 and it is. I am not asking about any other trans other then MK8's PKE-AD's.

Yup

Yup

Ok. I had to improvise because I couldn't find any with low miles. Lucky you.

I found one with 72K that's kinda low mileage for $249 and 1 year warranty? I think that's pretty good deal. Since I will be pulling trans might as well toss in a 98 to really take the large power coming soon.

Yup. I paid $150 for mine with approximately the same mileage but no warranty. $249 is a good deal. That surely won't break any rules in your budget-building department.

Funny story, my buddy had a built Crown Vic and went to the same salvage yard and got a 65K mile 4R70W dirt cheap. I think his was a 2000 model transmission. That was 2 years ago and that tranny is still in a Mustang as we speak shifting like a champ with an ON3 turbo kit with plenty of boost (11 second Mustang). 98+ tranny FTW!

I just found a 1998 NON police Crown vic trans with 36K for 250. Code PKE-X. That one should have all the goodies too correct and bolt right in.

Damn! That's a new tranny practically. I am leaning towards yes.

Here is the damn link that I was trying to find yesterday.

You will need to re-pin the connector, but I'm sure you already knew that. A re-pin is definitely worth the time for that gem.

That tranny looks like it is practically identical to the one that I have. Updated electronics, better frictions, newer planetary gear setup, and the mechanical diode. Looks like a winner to me.

I have to swap stuff inside so I am going to put old harness in and not repin. Nice link thanks.
