Thanks! Well apprieciated! Horrible speller i am... lol.. Syn was what I was already planning... just was sure about the brands... used mobil 1 on my bike and love it... so no questions there... thanks again.

I've seen people saying the same thing on other forums as well. Including with RP's gear oil in manual transmissions. Having an auto I do not know what oil the LS's with manuals require *is there a strikeout code?* scratch that, I just looked it up and it seems an '02 Manual uses Motorcraft MERCON ATF, but in many vehicles they either use GL4 or GL5 gear oil. Some designed for GL4 can use the newer GL5 oils, but not all of them. RP has an oil they that say is safe for GL4 applications, but in truth it is not. I have a friend who used it in a 90's import SUV, rated for GL4 only and 8mo later he was replacing the trans. He's a Master Nissan/Infinity tech (now working on the same status under Ford) and he tore it apart only to find that the soft parts (brass) in trans had basically been eaten away. Couple others have found the same deal when using GL5 based oils.

My personal preference in gear oil for GL4 only applications is RedLine's synthetic MT-90 GL4, because it is not a GL5 base that is "GL4 compatible."

RP has a rep that people seem to go for, but if you do some research, you really have to question how they got it outside of maybe the high performance/racing worlds.
 
I'm going with Amsoil synthetic next change. I appreciate the 1 year change intervals. Pays for itself after 1 cycle.
 
Mobil1 Extended Performance 5W-20 with a Mobil1 filter every 10K miles. As I am now in the ranks of the unemployed I will be driving less and therefore will go to the yearly interval. Been doing this on the 2000 for over 150K miles and both '06es.

At least I get a pension........

You're fortunate to get a pension. I got nothing because I have a pre-existing.

Sounds like a good way to go with the Mobil 1. $25 at Walmart for the first 5 qts.

In my opinion, based upon the evidence that has been presented to me, I am saying that I wouldn't use RP to start a fire, much less use it in an engine crank case, especially when there are dozens of good oils out there that have never been fingered as causing engine failures. Of course I would never stand in the way of someone who wanted to use RP beyond warning them of what others have reported, provided it wasn't my engine they wanted to use it in.

Just did some research.. Looks like I'll be switching my Cobra over to Amsoil.. Already have redline in the tranny and rear end..

Do you think it could have something to do with the coloring chemicals in it causing a problem?

I would have stayed if I wasn't age-terminated...... I really wasn't ready to go.

I'll be collecting unemployment as long as NObama demands that the state pays me :D It's a gummint pension and I'm getting ~64%. I definitely don't want a job as long as I get unemployment! Then, who knows. There isn't much call for an Air Traffic Controller outside of the FAA. I would like to get back to a tower, though. Working the tower is a hoot!

Sorry, have no idea. I just know too many people that lost engines using it, and won't use it myself. My opinion, of course.

So far as Amsoil goes, independent testing has shown that it's nothing special. Any of the full synthetics will do just as well. For that matter regular dino oil is fine for most people. The main advantage to synth is a longer drain interval and perhaps a bit more fuel economy. Again, my opinion.
