I know theres a 2 digit paint code as well as the VIN but the shop tells me that only the dealer can decipher the VIN number for paint and doesnt sell to shops.

They said the 8 digits in the VIN tells them if its pearl or not. Is that true? Never heard of that.

Don't think so..... How to decode a VIN.

The sticker in the drivers door jam has a two letter code for exterior paint color. Its on the lower left of the sticker

What year & color?

Maroon is GT.
Dark green is FU.

Most of the members here can tell your paint code by simply seeing a picture of your LS.

No no no lol. I know the paint code and the color. Im just asking if the 8 digits in the VIN thing is true or bs? The shop ordered the wrong paint apparently and the told me the VIN only tells them if its pearl or not by looking up the 8 digits.

They didnt have the car when painting.

I would have to say the VIN does tell them this information as it provides everything on the builds manufacturing specs.
However, I don't think they can just look at the VIN and get a paint code from it directly.
Only a search on that production build VIN would give them all details.

but either or ... they Fn nuts, the exterior paint code is on the damn label itself.

Did you follow my link? There are 3 differences in my wife's VIN and mine (both '06s). The differences are the place code for side-curtain airbags (she has them, I don't), the check digit and the last 6, which are production numbers. The color code is NOT in the LS VIN. Her LS is Dark Cherry and mine is Silver Birch.

It may not be in the VIN itself but when you run it, it will spit back everything on that LS including the interior & exterior color.
I think that's what those tools at the paint shop were trying to teach him, rather then looking at the paint code on the car itself,
they had to go make it difficult.

Someone F'd up, ordered the wrong paint and now they have excuses.
If the want to get the dealership to run the VIN to find out the paint code, let them, their time, their money.

We have yet to see the OP post or provide either a picture of that LS or the EXT PNT code on the label.

No, but Ford has a data base that knows everything about each car based on the full VIN number. There are some external databases that also have this info for most VINs.

My VINs are in there, but some that I have tried aren't.

That I know. I read the post to say one of the digits in the VIN was the code.

Here's one for them.... My car is Silver Birch and I used the code (JP) to get my WW spoiler painted. Well, it didn't really match. It seems that my particular Silver Birch is Sherwin-Williams JP, variation 5. They brought out a card selector with the 5 variations on it and they were slightly different. They will probably need the car to match the paint properly.

Oh, yea. Lincoln doesn't appear to call the Silver Birch pearl, but almost everyone else does!

I stopped at a Ford shop, gave them my VIN and they printed off the total history of the car.....and it didn't cost me a thing...I know crazy huh?

Interesting, great idea, never thought about that, gonna get one to. +1
