I bought it. Hopefully I can save it. I started a thread about it. Paid $750. If you guys help me through my troubles it will be saved.

It does need restoration. It looks better in the picture. There was a mediocre at best paint job done to it. There is orange peel. Someone decide to paint most of the chrome black so I don't know the condition of the chrome under the paint. There is interior trim popping out on the doors. There is some other loose trim and pieces completely off but I think I have most of the parts.

On the good side, there is very little rust. It looks great underneath. The transmission seems smooth. The leather is all in good shape except for some wear on the driver's seat. It has a lot of new parts.

Do yourself a HUGE favor! Paint all the black trim in cordovan to match the car. It will look gorgeous! Look at my old threads. I used to own a black '93. I painted the trim to match the car & it looked flawless. You won't regret it!

I'll try to post many pictures as things proceed. It might be pretty slow going. Money is tight but I don't want to cheap out on it either. I could get an engine for $300 with 190,000+ miles on it. Maybe it would be OK, maybe it wouldn't. There's another one for $650 with 106,000. Of course we haven't yet determined for sure if it needs a new motor.

Hopefully I won't let you guys down. I wanted to save it, so I took a chance. Money is tight for me right now and last year I spent money fixing up my other VIII. I'll just do a little at a time.

I got a 97 engine with 156,000 it for $450. I use those things to hold my garage floor down! LOL! An engine swap is easier than doing head gaskets if you determine that is the problem. Hopefully it is something small though.

It’s a slow process, after 10 years I thought I would be a little further with it then I am but life gets in the way some times.

Nice ride! There was a guy on .org a few years ago that was restoring a DA, haven't been over there in a while though so not sure how far along it is..but yours looks like it has potential, should look nice when its done. Good luck with it.

The car was rear ended and had some bad metal work around the gas cap.

Will a gen2 work if I swap the intakes,IMRCs, and wiring harness? I called a place I found online that sells rebuilt engines and I asked that question. But I was only talking to a salesperson. He said they were different part numbers. I said I knew that but according to their site they had the same block and head numbers. He still said they were different.

Yes, it does look like tape but it doesn't come off easily. I can't just peel it off. I thought maybe it was some kind of funky spray on stuff. I'd be interested in opinions on how to easily remove it from the chrome. However since the chrome might be failing it might be better for me to wait until I am ready to paint the chrome or have replacement chrome. That way the tape still protects it.

There's a small dent by the gas cap but I didn't notice anything else in that area that looks messed up. I'll have to look closer. It must have had a do it yourself paint job done too because otherwise I would think whoever owned it would take it back and tell them to do it right.

Blocks are all the same. You can swap intakes ... hell, you can swap all kinds of junk - just look at mine.. lol

With enough time and money and patience, you can do all kinds of nifty things

Loads of folks going with the de-chrome look now. It sure saves tons of time when you detail it. Not having to spend extra time polishing thin strips all over ftw

I've heard of people doing this, if you use just the short block I don't see why it wouldnt work.

Use the entire long block.. just swap the IMRCs and plenum.. or use the ENTIRE Gen2 engine and get a cowl hood

A 97/98 engine will drop right in and work with a few small tweaks, were it will get you is the hood clearance. You might be able to get away with a stock hood if you add spacers on the K member to lower the engine down.

You don't want to space the cradle, that throws the front wheel alignment off and adds extra stress to all of the suspension components

If you're swapping a 2nd gen engine into a 1st gen, why keep the 2nd gen intake on there if you have all the top end parts from the 96? Considering the 1st gen intakes flow better than the 2nd gens.

And that "bundle of snakes" GEN1 intake is a lot purdier than the rather generic looking GEN2. I miss my '96

Extra money in gaskets, time and chance of fncking things up. But if you had some extra cash and time I guess I would do it too....except replace the IAC before anything gets reinstalled.

It wouldn't necessarily cost more. It depends on what is out there for engines. My options are limited looking at only '96 engines.

I feel I would more likely screw things up trying to make a complete gen 2 engine fit in a gen 1 car. That's not to say I haven't been given great advice here on how to do it if I wanted too.

The only difference with the earlier mark motors (93, 94, and 95) is the air injection and non be-hive springs. So don’t narrow your search to just 96.
