hi im a brand new Lincoln owner and my car is in trouble, its a 2001 Lincoln ls V6. this happened as i was driving home from buying the car. it drove excellently very smooth and comfortable with no issues while i was testing it. then on the way home i started hearing this knocking sound! :o :o
it wasnt terribly loud but increased in intensity as i accelerated. naturally i immediately went to pull over and investigate, but before i could park she died on me with no warning. just stalled out.

now every time i try to turn it on it cranks over but refuses to start. i checked all the fluids before and after it stalled and they are fine. i also checked the fuel system and it is working perfectly. mayb im getting no spark but i dunno how to test that.. also she spit out 2 codes on the computer P0174 & P1289 but i dont think either of those would cause a crank no start situation

what happened to my car is she dead already????? :( :( :( please anyone with experience with this help me.

Not 100% sure but with the knocking then no start, it sounds like a timing chain tensioner issue. If it breaks as many do, then a whole bank will be out of time, causing a slew of drive-ability issues.

how can i tell if thats the issue, is there a test for the timing chain tensioner?

Never say never, but I haven't heard of any timing chain issues with the V6.

P0174 is driver's side bank too lean.

P1289 is cylinder head over temp. This could be real (some cooling system problem) or it could be an electrical fault. Either way, this could cause shutdown and keep the engine from restarting (the PCM does try to protect the engine). This car has failsafe cooling. Failsafe cooling will cause each cylinder to not fire every other time. This will cause greatly reduced power and rough running. Is there any chance that this is what you experienced?

Cooling system problems are common with both the hydraulic fan and the plastic cooling system parts. Are you sure the degas bottle was full? (It's the reservoir at the base of the windshield on the driver's side.) What's the fluid in the hydraulic fan reservoir look like?

u no what it was running sort of rough and that cylinder head temp thing your talking about is broken but i didnt think it would mess **** up cuz the car was running anyways. and i just checked the reservoir and its empty again so i dunno where my coolant went cuz it didnt leak out? i will try replacing that sensor and see if i can get it running

Sensor won't help......you need to fix the coolant leaks.

When and where did you get this car......I vote return it...try again.

but there is no coolant leak, none that i can see anyways. nothing is hitting the ground

You had coolant, now you don't = coolant leak. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. There's no other choice.

Yep--it's either on the ground or it went out the tailpipe. There were no drips or puddles in my garage when that craptastic plastic hose assembly on my '06 started leaking, but the coolant level was way the hell down.

ok but coolant leak shouldnt stop the car from turning on right. ive had cars before that leaked both oil and coolant and they still turned on and drove. also i checked the oil and its fine

Any other vehicle isn't your Linc LS! Use the "Search" function for this forum & you will find a 1000 posts or more on coolant problems. Every LS owner has had them!! Check the degas bottle for cracks, they all crack! Check the wires on the CTS (coolant temp sensor), located by the COPs (coil on plug) on drivers side, easy to replace this sensor. The top radiator manifold hose has 5 hoses connected to it that can leak. Check all items listed in the responses you have already. Your search for old posts on this problem WILL answer any questions & give you procedures. Good luck, let us know what you find & don't assume ANYTHING & remember this is a Linc LS with very specific peculiar problems & procedures for repair on some items.Engine Cooling being the biggest!!! The Jaguar Type S is the only other vehicle like the LS from 2000 -2006, the years the LS was made.

ok i will get to work on those problems right away. thank you guys for help :). but one thing, no one commented on that weird knocking sound i herd before the car shut off. does that mean its a typical problem when i have coolant leaks and i shouldnt b too worried?

Has it started since? And a knock is not typical, unless your confusing it as the fail safe cooling mode making the car run rough.

It's probably either confusion with the failsafe cooling, or a headgasket breach that hydro-locked the engine and bent a rod. One is much better than the other.

Much better. The OP said it would crank so at least its not hydro-locked.

...Just to be contrary...

My son hydro-locked by Ranger. It threw a rod, but it would still crank over. It would even start and run, but at low power and it sounded really bad. Of course, all or most of the oil poured out of the hole in the engine that the rod made on its way out.

well ive never herd of fail safe cooling before so i guess i have to hope for that. i definitely herd a sound coming from my motor before it shut off but ive never thrown a rod or anything like that so i dont no what that sounds like, also i dont have any holes in the motor where oil is leaking out lol so i hope that means my engine isnt completely fuked.

srry if im not explaining it all properly, im pretty new to cars and i really dont no that much :(

That's rough, sorry I guess anything's possible.

It's in the past, and I'm almost over it. At least my son and daughter weren't hurt. I know of cases were the people where drivers and passengers didn't survive the same stunt he tried.

oh and i still have crank but havent gotten it to start yet. i just replaced my cylinder head temp sensor and am currently checking for coolant leaks

Can you hear the fuel pump prime? Do you have fuel pressure? Will it try to catch if you spray starter fluid into the intake?

ya fuel system is working, i check the schrader valve and there was lots of fuel coming out. i tried the starter fluid thing and it didnt start the car. thats y i was leaning towards mayb im not getting spark but i dont no how to test that

Pull one of the COPs off and remove the associated spark plug. Reconnect the spark plug to the cop and hold the base or end of the spark plug against a metal part of the engine. Have some one turn the key to start and see if you see any sparks in the gap of the plug.

You have way more patience then I do with a car I bought and on the way home it dies.

I wish you good luck.
