Mark 8 Back glass weatherstrip

I have a 95 Mark VIII and the weatherstrip around the backglass is looking bad. It litterly broke off a strip where the wind catches it. I inquired at Fastpartsnetwork.com (formerly Fordpartsnetwork.com) and they said the weatherstrip is only come with the backglass. At almost $700, That's a hard sell for me. Anyone have an idea if I can get the weatherstrip from an aftermarket company?
 
This is an issue with Gen I Marks (my 98 does not seem to have the issue). My 95 started to curl and bubble way back in 1998 - just out of warranty. I ended up trimming very carefully and re installing and it ended up looking pretty good. I think if you do a search here on LVC you might find other solutions, since you are now missing a piece.
 
mine looks like black lasagna...looks bad next to the fresh paint
 
there has to be an aftermarket product!!! try calling a glass co!! or take a tree branch and smash your window and let the ins co fix it:) just kidding!!!!!!
 
You'll have to buy the bg because its one piece. I found a near perfect one in the junkyard, and im sure they would let it go for VERY cheap. My dad's friend works at and autoglass facility, so i got a new backglass for free.
 
I went to the glass shop that put my TC windshield in and they quoted me 120$ to take it off and replace it... They said they would have to pick the back glass up though to make sure its set right and they couldn't guarantee the glass wouldnt break

Nooooooooooo don't tell me that...i was so hopeful to avoid that on my 98. i guess i will keep waxing and hoping. GenII back glass is $$$$$ with the antenna being integrated into it. :eek:

Not really, I picked up the back window for $300. I wanted it because it has a perfect rubber seal. When I repaint my car I'm going to have the back window replaced.

Oh used, I wish I had a local salvage yard with a Mark in it, not a one!

I don't either, looked it up at car-parts.com and found a place up in Wisconsin that shipped it.
 
I have the same problem my friend used to have a 93 mark with the same prob hes a mechanic and knows alot about the car. He said he can have my strips look great again. What he did was go out and buy similar weather striping and cut off the old curly crap. Then he cut the new strip were the old one was and he said it looked great I think he used weather stripping adhesive to meet the 2 strips together. What I noteced with all the stripping curling like on mine it wasent the inside touching the window but the side touching the car itself so if u cut a stripping similar to it and place it were the outer striping was your good to go alot better then spending over 300 on a whole new piece that 2 or 3yrs down curl up. Also whats up with the guy making molds of the front head lights for the marks any news on that? Hope I helped I think the strippings my next project lol.
 
My 93's is good yet but my 95 is rippled. It sux.

Mike (94m5) was looking into a remedy I don't think he's come across a fix yet.

I think he was looking to come up with something that would just set over the strip.

I've heard of tucking the outside into the into the crease. I've done part of mine that way but it all wouldn't tuck in. The tucked area looks pretty good.
 
I used silicone sealant under mine on the top because I had a leak, and it had the side effect of removing the ripple.
 
so, getting a used rear window with a good seal is a possibility for someone with the right tools/experience?

Nope, no matter how good you are, the glass is glued in permanently and no knife can cut thru silicone

This stuff is the same trim used on door edges ... and some tards use it on every edge of a vehicle.. anyway, it doesn't work, if you're trim is wavy the edge cover will form to the wavy under it, someone used that kit on my 98 before I replaced the glass, it looked like someone just paid for extra terrible

Glass shops will replace the glass - however I've never heard of ANYONE getting a NEW rear glass, just swapped with a salvaged glass, you may ask before you have this done. I went and scouted several JYs for glass until I found a perfect one and pulled it myself to ensure I got the one I wanted
 
The real question is..say you find one with good window seal intact at a junkyard..what is the easiest and safest way to remove the rear window without a) breaking it and b) ruining the seal. I watched stang1 remove back glass on a car Paul van was parting out, however he used a tool that heats up the glass near the edge of the seal to soften the glue and make it MUCH easier to remove..don't know what the name of the tool is but eitherway you would need electricity to do so which most yards don't have in reach of your desired junkyard mark viii. Pick n pull is awsome on pricing but they won't move cars for you unfortunately.

I don't think there's any way of really removing the seal the way it should. Ford poured in that liquid seal & immediately placed the outer seal over it. It's all glued in together. 15 years definitely makes it that much worst.
 
Well, hell. I bought that kit from Temple but haven't tried it on the 98. I wonder if you could cut the ripple off and then stick the strip down so it isn't just being stuck to the ripple? Any suggestions?
 
My 95 has most likely curled sometime in it's lifetime.
What they've done is they cut the weatherstrip in half and then mounted an aftermarket weatherstrip side by side to the original that is cut in half.
Looks good on distance and looks terrible up close.
But to be honest, I'd rather have that than a lasagne on the rear window.
