East coast

Best goes out to all us east coasters. Hope alot of you have generators. We have been out of power since yesterday and most likely be out a week. NJ got it real bad, hang in there.

Thankfully we're far enough inland that we're not getting a lot of it. But it's been seriously windy here for the past couple of days and cold as holy hell!! And we haven't seen the sun in several days. I'm just hoping that all the folks closer to the coasts are doing okay. We haven't had anything this bad since Hugo that I can remember.

I live a mile from the Jersey shore, about 30 miles north of Sandy's landfall. 35 feet above sea level, so no flood damage.

2+ days without power, but I had a generator hooked into my furnace and fridge.

Just got cable and internet back within the last hour.

Lots of tree and wires down, but we're fine. Lost part of a fence, but that was it.

Many in the area still without power, I have my neighbor's fridge plugged into my deck outlet.

Here are a couple of pics from the neighborhood.

Glad you and your family are ok Doug, hope things get back to normal as soon as possible.

storm

my hopes and prayers are with you guys in Jersey. I'm in East Hartford Ct and this storm was'nt as bad as the last one,(no snow) Lost power for 3 1/2 days. Glad I bought a generator last year. Lived in so cal for 21 years and an earthquake does'nt sound too bad after these storms. Mother nature keeps messing with us.

I was with out power for two weeks when Charlie came through FL, Glad to hear you got it back quickly. Sounds like you were prepared as well.

We lost power for 6 days when Ike blew thru... Lots of trees down that time. I can't imagine the devastation on the coast...

I'm in staten island, we got it really bad. We also have the most fatalities :( Luckily by me nothing hit my house or the cars, just downed branches and lack of power. There are parts of Staten Island, New Dorp, Tottenville and several others that are completely flooded. This was a terrible thing, hope everyone's okay, stay safe! Its really crappy to see your own home town to be completely destroyed, people floating in the streets, homes completely torn to pieces..

All of my family lives in New Jersey. Grew up on the boardwalk in Seaside Park. I rode all those rides that no longer exist. My aunt and uncle has a house in Seaside Park. They don't know if it exists. Can't get to it due to sand dunes on the roads. My brother was working in E Rutherford when the Passaic river overflowed. His truck floated away and the building quickly filled with water. The Fire Dept. had to escue him and 3 co workers. He's fine but it scared the sh!t out of him. It could have been much worse. My prayers go out to others that weren't as fortunate as my family.

Watched some news coverage of the devastation, was like HOLY COW! They said Staten Island is under martial law, people can't come in. It must be horrible to have to wonder whether your home and possessions still exist or not. :(
My thoughts and prayers also go out to you guys and your loved ones. Hang in there!

Staten island isn't under martial law, maybe Atlantic city? Manhattan has a 3+ person restriction on all cars driving in.

I may have got the location wrong, but the reporter said that no residents are being allowed back in, as there are still gas leaks and other hazards being dealt with.

EDIT - You're right, it's Jersey Shore. News clip is here.

Your both right, there was a 3 person limit to come over the Verrazano into SI. It was removed a few days ago for SI. We got destroyed, I cant believe it. Its sickening to hear how many people died in this. Two little kids who were brothers under 4 both drowned, a 13 year old girl and a lot more. Stay safe everyone.

I live 1/4 mile from the Ocean in a small next to Belmar, NJ. My house is OK, but my town was hit very hard, although not as bad as Seaside, NJ or Staten Island.

Our board walk is gone and a lot of houses are destroyed, but luckily nobody lost there life in my town.

I still have no power, but have been at least using a generator. I have no idea when I will get power. The power company tried to turn power on in a section of Belmar and a house burned down, so they turned it back off.

I'm not sure what the full definition of marshal law is, but we have a curfew and can only be outside from 7am-6pm, the national guard is here as well as state police, you can not get in or out of town without an id, and there are concrete barricades blocking every street 1-2 blocks off the beach.

Here are some pics.

The first picture is a of part of my town, Lake Como, and part of my neighboring beach town, Belmar. This is an arial pic of a lake in our town that overflowed after it connected with the ocean. This water stayed until 2-days ago.

The second picture is of me kayaking over a road in 4+ feet of water trying to get to my sister's house that also lives in town. The only way to get to her house until Saturday was by boat. If you look closely there is a car's roof and trunk open in the picture.

The last picture I took while standing on ocean ave with parts of our boardwalk that is supposed to be behind where I was standing.

Ken, If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know.

Alexander Sonin, the wood shifter and steering wheel guy lives in Staten Island. I haven't heard from him. His area was hit hard.

I used to deliver bread in belmar, lake como, and Allenwood. I think the stores are probably gone now. That's nuts what happened to you guys.

just thought of this...wonder how many flood cars are going to be popping up in junkyards or for sale on craigslist in the weeks to come..(once power is restored) I never visited craigslist back in 05 when hurricane Katrina hit, so it should be interesting to see.

I'm sure a lot, there are tons of cars that were flooded. A lot of them were tossed down streets, and into houses like rag dolls.
