I was sold a chit transmission back in 2010 which puked out late 2010. The shoddy mechanic that was responsible agreed to put in the transmission that is in the car now which was a lower mileage transmission out of a 99 Crown Victoria from a local salvage yard that I had to pay for.
Now here's where we get onto topic. I remember pulling the speedo gear out of the VSS on the old transmission and in a short period of time the teeth were mostly broken and missing. Now I have been rocking the hell out of this newer transmission for well over a year and to my surprise this last weekend I went to pull the speedo gear out of the VSS and the gear was COMPLETELY INTACT.
So for all of you out there that have the 23-tooth speedo gear used for higher gearsets, if the gear is going to chit in a short period of time, you might want to suspect the transmission as the reason. I am going off the theory that it was possible that there was internal balance issues inside the previous transmission which caused accelerated wear on the plastic speedo gear that rides on the metal output shaft.
Maybe I'm wrong, but nevertheless it is interesting. And this is after an intake swap and going from 4.10s to 4.30s. Still, my speedo gear is perfectly intact. :shifty:
