Audio Question

Im looking to upgrade my components in my car. i currently have alpine type-r 6.5s up front, and infinity kappa 6x8s in the rear. I dont like how harsh sounding the tweeter sounds with the kappa set.

I cant make my mind up on which components to get. I want either the hertz hsk 6.5, hat imagine 6.5 or massive audio rk6 6.5.

im using a alipine 4x100w rms amp to push them. dont know the model # off hand.

Im also trying to come up with a different way to mount the front speakers. i feel like too much sound is being trapped in the door. I like having rear fill but i prefer my front stage to be louder than the rear, as it is now my rear is slightly louder.
Im thinking of cutting the factory speaker grill mounting them with one of those plastic speaker baskets on the other side to keep the sound out of the door.

I'm running Cadence comps f+r in the factory mid/tweeter locations and don't notice any issues. The entire outer skin is deadned and about 1/4 of the inner skin.

Do the kappas have one of those mini xovers? If so i'd move the tweeter attn to -3 (or equivalent). Fade to the front some more? Check h/u hpf settings ect..

For the doors i'd just make some 3/4-1" mdf rings. I wouldn't start cutting quite yet.
 
Ive heard good things about cadence. and yeah the kappas tweeter attn, is at -3. I have them mounted in the a pillar. i think thats the problem, should have tried the factory location for the 3" speaker in the rear. My ears are really tired after 30 mins or so of music.

Ill try some fat mat on the doors and some mdf rings and see if that helps. I didnt think of that. im new to this audio stuff, i used to just throw 2-4 12s and a amp in the trunk and call it a day.

would you say the cadence set you have is more of a spl speaker or more of a sound quality speaker?
 
You can insert a stepper volume control between the rear speakers and the alpine amp or place a line level attenuator inline between the deck and the amp to get you the front stage you are looking for.
 
Have you thought about using a 30 band graphic equalizer or maybe even a parametric eq to tame some of that harshness? It will definitely improve the overall spectral balance of the system once you get someone to tune it who is very knowledgable about tuning audio systems.

how much do those cost? im tired of playing with head unit settings and amp settings and not getting what i want.
Im thinking of just getting some 3 dollar 2 ohm 3ohm and 4ohm resistors and wiring them inline with the tweater output on the crossover, because the midbass sounds perfect, its just the tweaters rapping my ears on most songs.

if that dont do it. ill just buy 2 pairs of comps. i want a step up in sound quality anyway.

Do you mean b pillars? Theres your problem.

The cadence ones I have are a very good budget 6.5 comp set. If your considering Hertz I wouldn't even give cadence any thought..

Interior speaker don't have "spl", thats left to the subs. The int speakers (mids/highs) are just meant to accuratly reproduce freq's above 80hz.

If your not too familiar with setting up a 4ch, xovers or eq's ect I'd tweek more vs. buying new equipment. I'd move the rear tweets behind the grill and see how they sound.

p.s. I personnely like how the tweeters sound in the factory cubby holes/location.

well since they dont have spl, i meant that i dont want speakers that are just loud, i would prefer one that is clear with a nice tone that is not to harsh or distorted. vs just one that cn get really loud.

and thanks for the advice ren and sbc, ill take you guys advice before i just throw some higher priced speakers in there and possibly still end up mad
 
Do you have the Type r tweets on the A pillars or are you saying the kappa tweets are in the B pillars. Me = confused.
 
Aren't you using a crossover on those Kappa tweeters?

yes kappas are in the b pillars, my bad. alpine tweets in front door panel

that looks like set i have and i thought that if you leave the button up it was -3db? ill take the back panel off and look at my cross over again. i have my cross over in the location of the factory tweeter back there.

Yeah, I'd def say it's an issue with the rear tweeter location. That's really f'n close to the ears, and them being infinitys doesn't help...

I used the factory rear tweeter cups and a 1/4" piece of woodish type meterial to make the little adapter that attached to it.

I notice people in this thread have 6x5s in the front, is that the biggest that will fit? Would 6x8 ovals fit?
 
I also removed the carpeting cup from the stock speaker and glued it to the magnet of the 5X7 JL's so that most of the sound will be inside the car and not rolling all inside the doors.
 
The selector on the crossover is an option of -6 dB or 0 dB
If you do not want the tweeters to be bright, you'd choose option -6dB
 
An EQ would definitely help too if you don't want to keep throwing money at speakers to replace other good speakers.
