so i took out the spark plugs today only to find oil soaked plugs... its not the valve cover gaskets. this is the bottom part, (electrode) i hate my car so much right now.

what could be the cause, piston rings valve guides anything else

are you sure the oil wasn't in the plug well and when you took the plug out, that oil leaked down the plug?

actually I am positive that is not what happened. The tops of the plugs were clean as well as nice dry coil boots. but the plug (part in the cylinder) was coated in oil.

Is it wet oil, or just heavily carboned. Was the car running real rough?

I would think drippy wet oil would be a serious ring issue would cause a very rough operation, heavily carboned might be not firing hot enough maybe?... and still give a rough operation.

Broken rings would most def cause a boat load of smoke, and a regular loss of oil.

Other possibility might be the seals around the valves failing. More likely if you're seeing wet oil on the plugs.

I've seen this on a Dodge van I had, but the symptoms were, not totally smooth idle but livable, and (very) light smoke from the exhaust on first start but would stop smoking when the engine got to temp.

This would show wet oil on the plugs (and pistons) after the car has sat for a while.

A valve job cleared that up.

i dont know buddy, if your running fine and no smoke, Id still point to the gasket. could be it just blew and hasent had a chance to gum up the boot yet..

almost seems its time to find a new LS, hate to see ya have all these problems. makes us 1 gen guys cringe...

See his other thread. It's not running fine. However, no mention of smoke was made either.

2002_lincolnLS, are you sure it's oil and not raw gasoline combined with carbon on the plug? Are you seeing blue smoke out the exhaust when it starts to bog down?

Well Joe I do not see blue smoke while it's bogging down. But I do believe it is Oil on the plug it smells like oil and it is dark. It could be gas and oil but they were pretty well coated. So I do think that it may have some blow by and by the time there is enough oil in the cylinders it bogs down. This may be wrong but I am getting a compression tester to check to see if my rings or something else may be bad. I'm sure if the head gaskets are bad oil can leak in because it did over heat once or twice over the summer when I had. Oolong issues

Sorry to hear it. It seems like this is just going from bad to worse for you...

No kidding and it's never a better time of year. I think it will have a for sale by owner sign soon. I love the car but if it needs much more than a few hundred I just can't afford that with college loans and other bills but I may figure it all out soon enough.
