Hi all. I have a question about the xcal and transmission jerkiness. I have searched and found a few things, but no clear answer. My transmission is sometimes a little jerky when it shifts, not too bad, but still a slight concern. I thought I have read the xcal can smooth out shifts, is this true? I'm also interested in better mileage, another feature of the xcal I thought read. I'm more interested in those things, rather than performance gains. Is an xcal something that would benefit me? If so, isnt there different versions of the xcal out there? Which one would do me the best?

If you have experience with xcals and those benefits, please help me out. I really want to get one, if it could help.

Yes - the SCT tunes can change both the shift points and the shift firmness.

If you use a tuner - they can work with you and your driving style to re-work the tunes until you like them.

Mine are very firm (jerky) and we worked the shift points to get the best 0-60, 0 -100.

Is there a particular tuner you suggest? I recall Torrie? and someone else mentioned the most, but I'm not sure how to get ahold of them. Sorry if I'm being a noob.
 
Now, without hurting anyones feelings, would anyone recommend one over the other. Or do they get pretty much the same results? I'm assuming because you didn't list a website for ILLS, that I should pm him if I want to go that route? Thanks Quik. I appreciate it.
 
ILLS isnt a vendor on this forum and doesnt like to do business on the open forum. There a few members who's car he works on. One of which has to be the fastest NA first gen on here. He's a good guy knows his stuff pretty well. He will be the one working on my 01 as well. I have no experience dealing with Torrie, but I've heard that name allot so that wouldnt be a bad choice either. Guess its just a matter of you like doing business with better. There are places ALL over the country will Xcal and tuning experience. Who knows, maybe your local guy can dial it in better for ya. Best of luck
 
I think the difference between the two tuners is there approach to initial tune. Either tuners will have a starting point and work with you to get tune to your preference. It is important that you have after the sale customer service, both show this. I don’t have specific numbers but I think it would be safe to say Torrie has probably tuned more LS if that is important to you.

With all that being said, my experience has been with Torrie and can’t say enough about his service.

Agreed! Ecept that I have only dealt with ILLS and he too has some top notch customer service (not to many people understand how important customer service is these days!) and in my book that means the world! Sounds like its just a matter or pick one and get ahold of them.

Speaking of Xcals and transmissions... I don't care so much about shift firmness or shift points. What bugs me is how slooowww the transmission/computer often reacts to SST shift requests. I am not racing it, I just want it to not take several seconds to accept my command! lol

Can the Xcal help speed that up?

I'd kind of like to hear if anyone has an answer for owlman. That's always bothered me, too!
 
that is often corrected by shift firmness - the higher line pressure does improve the shift speed - but the trade is harshness (not neccessary a bad thing unless taking to excess).
 
Since I've tried an "aggressive" tune from ILLS, I have not used my SST...which was common for me in the summer months with Torrie's tune. Absolutely no need to bother with it any more. My $0.00000005.
 
depends what/how you drive - but you still need SST to hold the car from upshifting.
 
My main complaint was that the car was a dog in the summer time heat/humidity and would not get out of it's own way until I floored the pedal so I would use the SST because it was far more responsive.

I'm not here to 'take sides', but I've used tunes from both people and notice a night and day difference.
 
IB there are taking about shift speed and if the XCal can help - no?

I know exactly what you're talking about and it's exactly what I wanted fixed via xcal as well. It lived up to 90% of my expectations I'd say, from 2-3 there is still a bit of lag that never goes away depending on how fast you're accelerating fyi. Nature of the mechanics though and not the tune, the tune makes it the best it can be though imo.

I got my tune from ILLS.
 
FWIW, I had my trans reworked by a local (sorta) guy. I just 'stab-it-and-steer' when Maxton racing. My SCT tune gives stiff but not too harsh shifts at about 6500, which is what I asked for. And I'm still running the original trans after 120K miles and four nat'l records. If it were me I'd go to ILLS and have him give me a tune (through the 'net). I'm sure you'll be satisfied. My 'after the sale' was poor.
