Wow Octane would seem to make more of a difference than I thought?!

Yeah so me being cheap on my old 96' Mark I had almost always put in 89oct gas. Got the new one (98) and I guess old habits die hard cause I kept doing the 89 thing.

Well after my lil gasket failure with the filter adapter I put 93 in it cause I wanted to avoid any problems with detonation seeing as I had an air pocket in the system. Anyway I noticed that before when I would go WFO it would take off but then stumble and come back on but with less power?

I figured I may have oil getting into the plug boots as my valve covers leak. Seems it was pulling timing from detonation as now with the 93 it pulls had and clean all the way to shift.

When these sense detonation do they pull timing a bunch? Did the 96 do the same thing as the 98 is doing or are they the same ECU basically?

Curious as my WRX got a main knock that couldn't be heard but the knock sensor did and it pulled so much timing I went from 12.5 to 14.0's when I was finally able to hear the knock at idle and put it to the side until I split the case for a rebuild

I believe octane will make a difference if you reset the KAM, basically pull the battery cables for an hour or so... It will go back to before it learned to back off the timing and the higher octane fuel will have more of an effect.
