Televangelist Calls for Assassination of Chavez

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson suggested on-air that American operatives assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to stop his country from becoming ''a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.''

Pat Robertson, 75, is the founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate.

''We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,'' Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network's ''The 700 Club.''

''We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator,'' he continued. ''It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.''

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

''You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,'' Robertson said. ''It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop.''

Robertson, 75, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan ''terrorists'' in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson has made controversial statements in the past. In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to ''kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.''

I can't stand Pat Robertson and it really angers me that he tries to represent Christianity.

Does it matter?? What you naive libs seem to think is that we on the right have one mind. Get over it. You guys are such vultures. Oh well. You guys just keep on proclaiming how great your almost wons were. We'll keep winning to ensure you can do that!!

:I But isn't Robertson a shrubbie too?

Apparently you don't pay attention to my posts. Here's my position on a few key areas.

Pro Iraq
Pro Afganistan
Anti-abortion
Pro-Gay Rights
Pro-Separation of Church and State
Pro-Religious Freedom (God bless America is cool with me and I'm an atheist)
Pro-Equal Opportunity (To an extent)

Does that sound like a mindless "Shrubbie" as you would so paint me?

It's people like Mr. 700 club and the rest of those who follow a warped path and call it Christianity that I do not want to be associated with the name Christians....

I am a follower of Christ but I am not an American Christian. I haven't gone to church for 2 years due to the thought of being associated with what I believe is a false belief... These people use the Bible only when it fits their needs and twist God's Truth under the umbrella of the word Christian.

I am not afraid of my faith or my disassociation with the word Christian. But I do believe in the words and actions of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I do not believe in the words and actions of these fundamentalist self-called Christians. They are no different than the fundamentalist follower of Islam who call themselves Muslims. They are both so faraway from each other that they have both come full circle to meet.

So now you know how it feels to be stereotyped. Welcome to the club!

and you wonder why we sterotype you. Like we've never been sterotyped before?? Sure, all Repugs are Bush loving, Rush listening, Religious zealots who want to do bad things like bring back slavery and kill old people. Right. Thanks for the welcome to the sterotyped club, but we've been members for a long time. Funny, because we've been sitting right next to you guys at every club meeting, you just don't seem to notice because you're too busy crying how you're sterotyped and blah blah blah blah.

No, we've noticed you at the club meetings, but certain members of this board pull out stereotype arguments against certain other members of this board all the time. Not only is it really annoying, but as this thread shows, not necessary.

No offense, but I get called a Rush listener, Bush Zombie just as much as anyone else gets called a lib or whatever you poor guys are complaining about. Look, you guys are just as guilty as we are, so you should give up the "good" fight of "poor me, I'm sterotyped..." because you're the only ones buying it.
