When you hit the brake it won't go into drive. Only way around this is taking the cable off the red thing under the shift handle. This started when I first parked the car 9 months ago to work on it.

Only thing externally not on the car is the neon light on the back.

Do your brake lamps light up when applied? If not the neon probably blew the brake lamp fuse. Disconnect the neon under the trunklid and replace the brakelamp fuse, I believe it is 34, and a 15a fuse, but double check that in your manual. The car does not recognize that a brake is being applied and therefore wont let it shift out of park.

Is the key in the ignition and turned??????, i know its stupid, but some people forget

car was on.

Also, the neon has never worked. Need to buy a ballast or somehow see if the neon is what's bad. It's never worked.

before it was parked I checked the continuity on all the fuses as I was trouble shooting a fan issue.

gen2 right? its a temp fix but easier, turn the key to the first spot (not acc, before that) and pull it outta park and then start the car in neutral. just make sure the brake lights work, you don't need the neon mine has been unplugged for a couple years now

31 and 32 were out..

31 10A Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting Module
(Park Lamps)
32 15A Brake On/Off Switch, Brake Pressure
Switch

I'll replace and see what happens. Just for the next guy. These were the fuses inside the car not under the hood.

they will pop again most likely, try unplugging your neon and your cruise deactivation switch and try it first, if ok plug in the cruise switch (yes the dreaded recall one in your pass ft fender) if still ok then try the neon. my cruise one went just before parts were available from ford, i fixed that then it was ok for a while and then it happened again but this time it was the ballast for the neon shorting out, even after it stopped working 2 years ago now it decided to eat fuses, unplugged it and all is well
