does anybody know if they make a kind of tint for windows that gets darker in sunlight but fades when the sun goes down? just like eye glasses do. that idea popped into my head today while i was working and saw a guy with those kind of glasses. i would love to do that with my ls. i had 5% all the way around on my previous car and loved the way it looked but it was to hard to reverse out of somewhere when it was dark, couldnt see for sh*t. with my ls i went with 20% but because the seats in my car are a light tan it makes it look way lighter. it doesnt look bad but i would like to go darker and not have the issue at night. if you know of a product like that please let me know.

That's a great idea! I know those eyeglasses you're talking about. Maybe it's too expensive for a big area like windows?

haha geez that patent sounds pretty extreme. a little too complicated for me. i was just thinking of a kind of film just like regular tint. but like owlman said it would probably be very $$$$

Yeah, that patent is rediculous. There is no reason for it to be that complicated. The eyeglass lenses simply have silver halide distributed throughout the material which reacts to ultraviolet light causing the change. The key word is photochromic. Do a google search and you will come up with all sorts of things. I am not seeing any sort of film yet, or any actual products out there. But it looks like others have had the same idea.

i don't think they make a film for it. they have them for homes, but they're electrically controlled. to make it clear, you energize it and all the little pieces of metal or whatever line up and you can see through. or vice verse. i'm sure you can get it made to fit your window. but it might be expensive.

doesn't mercedes or bmw's have that stock on rear glass?

kind like an auto dimming rearview mirror?

3. Vehicles
SPD Smart Glass and plastic products will be used in vehicles for sunroofs, side windows, rear
window, top of the front windshield, side mirrors, rear view mirrors, sun visors and panoramic
roofs. The issues in integrating SPD Smart Glass controllers into a vehicle include determining
an appropriate physical location near each SPD window, satisfying power constraints, vehicle
communication interface selection, diagnostics, quality assurance testing, compact size, extreme
temperatures, and just-in-time delivery of controllers to the vehicle assembly line.

The Systems Behind the Glass®
Besides the obvious aesthetic value of SPD windows there is a substantial energy efficiency gain
by blocking solar energy. This allows for a less powerful air conditioning unit and reduced air
conditioning operation resulting in up to a 10% increase in miles per gallon according to
government estimates.
The dynamic tinting of the windows can be manual and automatic. Manual tinting allows
passengers and the driver to directly control the tint using devices such as push buttons and solid
state sliding switches. Automatic tinting can be accomplished for many conditions including the
vehicle turned on and off, glare, internal temperature, changing state boundaries, emergency
conditions, security conditions, time-of-day, personal settings, door lock state, and more. For
example, when a car is unlocked the windows clear to allow you to look into the car before
entering and when the car is started the window tint is automatically changed to the level before
the car was turned off.
