I have an '00 Ls 8. Have had problems with the tranny since I bought it. I got it for a steal, $5500, or so i thought b/c I didnt notice the tranny problems till I ran the car for at least 45 min. This site has shed alot of light on the problems i'm having.

I've already replaced the valve cover gaskets myself and several coils. Its running good and is now time to address the tranny problem. I am having the well documented harsh shifting and a slight shudder in 2nd gear at about 20 miles an hour. I know its not a coil issue. It will also shift out of 5th into 4th for a split second at highway speeds then shift back out. After it's warmed up, it will sometimes die at stops like the torque converter is staying engaged.

I'm taking it to get checked out today, but was curious to know if the newer trannys would work. I have the feeling that it needs a solenoid pack and a new valve body, but may have gears damaged. I am juggling fixing my tranny or finding a junker.

Thanks for the help!

No, the 00-02 trans is a 5R55N
03-06 is a 5R55S

The S trans runs on a CAN system that the 03+ uses and communicates with all the other vehicle modules.

The 00-02 uses a standard ISO system.

Somebody might be able to adapt the 5R55S to work in a 1st Gen LS, but it's not going to be cheap, and not just any slob with a shop can do it. As 02 noted, the control systems are incompatible, so you'd need someone who can rig an independent controller for the tranny and tell your car's PCM to stop looking for/trying to control it.

In other words, it probably can be done, but for the time, trouble, and money, you're better off repairing what you have or replacing it with another 5R55N.
