wi-fi question

got the girl friend a net book for Christmas, and to get internet at her house you have to use someone else's unsecured wi-fi. and she's all worried about getting traced down and getting trouble. anybody know the consequences of doing this LOL
 
I'm not a computer expert, but I don't think they can find out. My BIL's been doing this for two years. Those with WI-FI, set it up with a password!!!!
 
only way the person can really catch you is if they go into their router by typing its ip address into your internet browser and then they can physically kick you off of it and ban your netmask/ip shiz. depending on what kind of router they have. you can actually do it to them. most router's default username/pw is username: admin pw: admin or just blank.

I doubt you can get into any legal trouble from this because wi-fi is a personal thing meaning it is the owners/users responsibility to secure and keep watch on it.

No, you can actually get in a lot of trouble "borrowing" wifi; people have been arrested for doing just that. Right now, it's an unsettled area of law, so it depends on how your local authorities choose to pursue it if your neighbor notices it and brings it to their attention.

Given that it's an open access point, it's not likely that they will notice unless you're doing something that will draw the attention of the authorities (or a group like the RIAA or MPAA) or something that uses enough bandwidth to affect their network access. Then again, maybe they're uber-7337 hax0rs, and they're leaving the network open so they can steal your information...:shifty:

The police officer didn't even know it was a crime at first either. I think they should make this law a little more known before they just start arresting people.
Personally I think that if you have an non secure wifi, then you're welcoming people to stop by and use it. All routers now days pretty much set up a secured wifi for you when you set it up for the first time anyway. So you would actually have to go out of your way to make it non secure...
 
This is how I look at at:

If you're dumb enough to leave your WiFi access point open, I will use it.

If you've locked up your WiFi access point, I will not use it... Unless it's a dire emergency... like, for example, my ISP has blocked my favorite Midget Porn website. If it's an emergency, all bets are off. I will fire up Aircrack, break your silly WPA2 encryption and use your WiFi connection. I won't use much bandwidth, midget porn photos and videos are fairly small.
 
ive been using my neighbors wifi for 6 months already.......theyre never home too, so i use it for them :D




oh and lot of my friends do the same thing, people just dont bother to put a password on it............
