I drove my car to work this morning and everything was fine. When I left for lunch everything was okay but half way through it started accelerating while I was coasting and when I shift it to neutral it rev's up to 3000 rpm what would cause this. I did try turning it off and turning back on but still reved way up. I can get up to 50 mph without touching the gas.

??????

IAC, probably not. Throttle position sensor, could be. Throttle cable, good chance.

What year?

I was actually going to recommend cleaning out the throttle body. I think if its all gummed up and the butterfly is sticking it might cause that condition. Also try cleaning the MAF while you're at it.

Oh.... good idea.

Also, check for a vacuum leak? A leak can cause a rough idle, but a big one could cause a high one. Unless I am thinking old school carb engines :)

Ok, that makes it harder to check. So its still high, right? Wont go down at all? Then take the intake tube and get a look at the throttle body plates, as suggest above, they may be stuck - this could also be a sign of a sticking throttle cable.

For a car to run at 3k you need plenty of fuel and air, its getting air form somewhere. It it were just the throttle position sensor alone, I think it would run like crap and be dumping tons of fuel in. Hmmmmm

So I got off work yesterday and everything ran fine, I didnt even chech anything yet just turned it on and it worked.

Whats the deal?

ditto. Keep and eye on it. The throttle cable, if bad, it like a bicycle brake cable and they can fray inside the line. WHen this happens they can get stuck, unravel or snap.

TPS i just had to fix that prob, i had to hold the gas in all the way to start the car and it would idle at 2400 rpm and the tranny would not shift till i hit six K
