Hello all,

I have a 2000 Lincoln LS v8 60k. Recently I've noticed a whining noise towards the end of my drive sometimes..(always at the end, engine warmed up 20 miles driven or so.)

The whining follows the throttle, with pitch rising with acceleration and falling and stopping altogether at a stop. It sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine. The noise isn't always there so hard to pinpoint but I'm guessing it's a power steering or hydraulic fan component. It isn't always present, come and go.

Does anyone have a similar experience they can share, or any information or ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

This rotation only noise might be the rear end generating a high frequency pitch. Does the pitch become louder ascending a hill under a heavy acceleration? I had this issue once with a remedy of a fluid change with Red Line Light Shock Proof gear oil including about 4 to 5 ounces of Nanotech Industrial Solutions IC-3110. Results were good with inaudible noise. You can use engine oil Additive AC-1000 as use in the power steering pump also.

Thanks for your reply Steve, I forgot I made this post I need to come on here more.

It's possible the noise is coming partly from the rear but highly doubtful. It sounds like it is coming from the pulley area of the engine but I cant pin it down to a specific area. The noise is also present with the car at standstill while pressing the accelerator, thus no rotation of the diff. I know it's not the pulleys, as it is not that type of sound, and only happens after about 20 minutes of driving (fully warmed up fluids).

My guess is it is the power steering or the hydraulic cooling fan pump. Thank you for the fluid additive advice, thats an idea. the ball joints all need changing. I changed the differential fluid recently, as I bought the car less than a year ago and changed everything. I just bought some rislone power steering stop whine as I couldn't find this ac1000. It is compatible with mercon and has good reviews. I'll check back here and post the results when I get them.

Transmission.
It is not the transmission. The noise is intermittent, and only after a 20 minute drive. If it were the transmission, the noise would most definitely be present unfailingingly after each 20 minute drive warm up. Also the noise is coming from the front of the engine.
