Whats up with the head lights?

I don't know if I'm missing something about the head lights but I don't get it. I drive a 1993 Mark VIII and I have no problem with my head lights, but it seems everywhere I look some one is complaining about their headlights or talking about some HID conversion something or another.
So I guess my real question here is what is the point of HID exactly and should I worry about a conversion?

The reflective material in the housing has been known to fade with time and use.

Faded reflective backing = dim headlights

HIDs will give a brighter light, and the reflective material in the HID housings won't burn up like that of the halogen housings.

Plain and simple... they SUCK!!! get HID's.
