What's this fluid on the ground??

Well, LVC I went to the dealership to check onthe fans that were coming on and like many of you said it was normal b/c of the heat that has been ridicalous here in Florida.

***I forget to mention one thing. For the last couple of days I have been waking up to find small puddles of a red fluid on the garage floor under the front drivers side/center of the car. It not a lot but anything ending up on the garage floor is alarming. I used a napkin to wipe it up and get a clearer look and it looks to be a red/rust like color. Any idea of what it is and how to stop it?*****

I have also been doing alot of highway driving, any tips on maintainance/checks to keep car running smooth in the the summer heat.


6/17/2010*** Well, I just received word back from the lincoln dealership. Turns out the fluid leaking is the steering fluid from the sterring rack in which the O'rings have deteriorated. I was told simple fix for $100 and some change. I was also told a small leak was found from the a.c compressor in which the price nearly knocked me out of my chair. the ac has been working great for me though with a few problems on long drives.

might be tranny fluid...or power steering fluid if u have ford tranny fluid in there and never changed it...just a guess

red fluid - the power steering fluid reservoir is on the driver's side, while the fan reservoir is on the passenger side (Gen1) - the fan pump is on the passenger side above the alternator and the the hydralic connector on the fan is nearly center. If the trans is leaking it may be dripping from the inspection plug in the center of the bellhousing.

so depending where the fluid dropped from there are several points to look at. Get underneath with a flash light.

Hope it isn't ya trans. Mine is leaking, more like dripping, from the torque conv. seal

I assume the price for the AC work was around $700? I think that's about what it was for my 04. The problem is that the compressors start leaking where the two halves of the compressor meet. What leaks out is oil, so the cooling stays okay because you aren't loosing any R-134. Here's the catch. After it leaks long enough, the oil level becomes too low and the compressor starts coming apart. It will work just fine while this is happening, so you won't notice. By the time it fails, little bits of metal from the compressor have spread everywhere. The $700 repair now seems high, but the bill will be in the $3000 range next year when this happens, because everything will have to be replaced, not just the compressor.

WOW, thanks for the heads up on the compressor. You are exactly right on the cost and the fact that it's working fine now. Man, i'll have to look into getting it taken care of.
