What Up Everybody Gas Prices Are Freaking Crazy Now So I Was Forced To Use The Cheap Gas For Awhile Lol Well Anyways After Like 2 Days It Started Making Like A Tapping Noise But Im Unsure If Its Cuz Of The Gas Im Going To Swtich It Up Anyways Just In Gas But I Want To Kno What Everyone Uses?
 
i fail to understand why people put 87 in their LS's. All they see is the number after the 3 dollar sign. People dont seem to realise that the difference is only about 6% and will drop further the more expensive gas gets. There is no reason to use 87.
 
Wat r the differences btwn the gasses?? Does the expensove give u more mpg or more life of ur engine or sum?
 
the LS needs better than the cheap s**t you are refering to. it's not that people think it's better, the engine needs it (had to make that clear). use 91+
 
Premium is about 20 cents more that regular around here as with many places. Sometimes 30 cents.

So worst case scenario
.30 x 18 gal = $5.40

I've got to admit that an extra $5 for a properly run engine, just isn't that bad.
 
Questions like this make my head hurt.

One, there is information galore on the internets about the differences in octane ratings and why certain engines require higher or lower octane gasoline.

Two, as pointed out, the difference is negligible, a few dollars per tank at best. Fortunately auto manufacturers nowadays do a pretty good job of idiot-proofing cars, so if some yokel runs low-grade gasoline in an engine designed for premium, there most likely won't be any permanent damage done in the short term.

For the record, that "tapping" you're hearing is called DETONATION, and just in case the name itself didn't tell you, thats a BAD THING. What is the cure to detonation, you ask? Use higher octane gasoline!

I never understood why people will spend the money on a car and not take in to account cost of ownership - maintenance, potential repairs, fuel cost, things like that. If you can't afford premium gas, you shouldn't own a car that REQUIRES it.
 
Sunoco 93 octane/ Premium. I never put the 110 octane fuel they sell for $8 a gallon or the regular cheap :q:q:q:q (octanes under what the car requires). Always Sunoco though.
 
You can use 87, its not really bad for it. If it was performance car, and not a luxury, it might matter. I've used 87 for the past 7 years and it has never effected the engine or quality. Its a decent enough engine the computer can deal with it. But if you guys want to spend another $150+ a year, thats cool.
 
What does $150 dollars a year matter? Quite frankly, if you cant afford 150 more a year then how will you deal with the problems of owning a *typical* LS? or any other car for that matter. I use 93 only. This morning it was 3.65 and I was running on fumes. Gas gage said 2 miles to empty. Took me for $64.57. If it climbs to 4.50/gal I might sell it and get a Honda.. but I doubt it.

p.s. j/k about the Honda.

The PCM is tuned for 91+ octane fuel. Using anything less will result in higher chance of detonation. The engine being decent and you running lower octane fuel than what the vehicle is tuned for are two totally different things. I have seen many decent engines killed due to improper use causing detonation. Once you understand why the LS requires fuel with a higher octane you would probably change your mind regarding the advantages/disadvantages of your methods.
 
And another note. Using 87 octane will retard timing causing bad gas mileage so you are not saving anything. Let alone not spending the $150 to keep from damaging your engine.
 
cheveron with techron :) I did an 8 page paper on the development and technology of techron. Good stuff.
 
As I posted in another thread: Just read in Road & Track; east coast premium is predominately 93 octane, in the west, however, premium is 91 octane. No reason for the difference is given.

Another consideration is the altitude you live at, the higher the altitude all auto can use more octane.

I run Super whether it's 91 - 93 but 91 in Texas "seems" to be a thing of the past.

I figure at a difference of $3.60 per tank I can "swing it". ;)
 
I've run premium of whatever the cheapest available is around. Costco for about the first 40k miles, then usually Shell. But when traveling..as long as it's name brand, thats all I care about. 94k miles and all is well
