Questions like this make my head hurt.
One, there is information galore on the internets about the differences in octane ratings and why certain engines require higher or lower octane gasoline.
Two, as pointed out, the difference is negligible, a few dollars per tank at best. Fortunately auto manufacturers nowadays do a pretty good job of idiot-proofing cars, so if some yokel runs low-grade gasoline in an engine designed for premium, there most likely won't be any permanent damage done in the short term.
For the record, that "tapping" you're hearing is called DETONATION, and just in case the name itself didn't tell you, thats a BAD THING. What is the cure to detonation, you ask? Use higher octane gasoline!
I never understood why people will spend the money on a car and not take in to account cost of ownership - maintenance, potential repairs, fuel cost, things like that. If you can't afford premium gas, you shouldn't own a car that REQUIRES it.
