What kinda oil do you use?

The thing about Frams is that they are the best selling filter on the road. They have a large following and most people don't know/care about filter construction. For this reason, Fram can get away with making a mediocre filter, for a larger price.

I don't know what you guys are paying for Frams, but around here they aren't expensive at all. $3-4 seems to be the range, and I wouldn't call that expensive.

They just take thirty cents to make, I'm sure.

Their devout following comes from people who use them for literally decades and are afraid of change :)
 
FRAM's offerings and Motorcraft filters aren't that much different in price, but the quality of the motorcraft filters is wayyy worth it.

Around here, Fram's are 4-6 dollars, 3.67 for a Motorcraft at walmart, which is a superior filter.
 
Now that you've cut them open, I suggest you go ask the guy at the parts counter for a few canister filters. The kind that $100K cars run. Try for example, a 2006 Mercedes Benz SL55. You'd be suprised when you see it. Its nothing more than that from with plastic runners on the top to hold it together. Also check the filters for the M5, Audi S4, etc, they all use canister filters that would rank right there with that fram filter, they are just in a mounted housing instead of a spin on design.
 
True the wix filters I use for my dad's 996 carrera 4 are canister style with a plastic cage.
 
But they are being put into a solid usually cast aluminum housing... the biggest problem with Fram is that the flimsy case and the :q:q:q:qty element separate and then the oil is no longer filtered.

You'll find canister filters on most European cars, actually.

There's a reason for that, anybody know why?
 
only 100k car ford has (work at ford dealer) is the GT and that takes a fl820s :D
as for canister filters heres a FL2017B fords canister filter for a focus, escape, basically the newer 2.3 and it still looks 100 times better than the fram

no the gt uses a 820 (like the markviii :)), thats a focus filter (2.3). i forgot about the diesels, that would of been a better pic , much bigger.
 
reguardless, the canister filter is in a aluminum housing, so what? The fram is in an aluminum housing.....I'll give you three guesses as to how many frams have lost oil from housing failure, and the first two don't count......:rolleyes:

Two that I personally witnessed :)

Euro cars: the can retains more used motor oil than just the cartidge itself. While OCI and QC are two very good guesses, the answer is in fact that the Greenies are responsible. Cans are not used on many (if any at all) new engines in Europe in an attempt to keep used motor oil out of the landfills.

Cheaper to manufacture is a side benefit...
 
I bet that was from the gasket not the filter housing itself, two totally different leaks.....

No, the filter casing split. Literally, split down the middle.

Wish I would've known what his oil pressure was at, but that thing just had an idiot light instead of a guage. Like I said above, it was an early 90's Jeep with an unmodified 4.0 running 10w30, and it was a PH16 filter that split on him.
 
I had a filter split as well driving down the road. On a honda accord. It was the oil pressure regulator So I was told. Ran off road and some dirt locked it open.
