weird noise.

recently i have been starting up my car and i have been hearing a fast clicking sound that sounds like its coming from the engine close the the intake. no idea what it could be...

it's an on LS v8 with 17k miles on it.

Your car is kinda too new for any problems like this but I would suspect...

a bad vavle lifter/follower. An exhaust leak, an intake leak(unlikely to sound like this tho) perhaps a noisy injector.

Get a rubber hose and stick it in your ear and then use it like a stethoscope to see if you can localize the sound. Also a long screwdriver with the plastic end shoved in your ear can be used to localize sounds coming from inside the engine by holding the pointy end against the metal part where the sound is coming from.

Of course make sure you don't get the hose or screwdriver or body parts into moving parts.

Same noise

I too have this ticking on cold starts. Mine does go away after the engine is warm and is good for the rest of the day. I took a long handled screw driver (like suggested) and listened along the top of the motor. I think mine could be injector related. Tried some injector cleaner, but it didn't help. I will be telling the dealer next time I'm there cause it is still on warr. Mine is an 04 v8 with 25000 miles. If you search the threads, there is good info in the one from owlman that has the shop manual in it.

check out the a/c. mine ticks when the a/c is on, sounds horrible.

Your A/C compressor could be short cycling and creating this sound. Test it with the A/C off and the A/C on and see if there is any difference.

Ticking Noise At Start Up

It might also be a cracked exhaust manifold. As the engine warms up the "crack" is closed off.
