Vibration / Loud Noise

Hi all, been awhile since I posted here, but I'll get right too it.

I have replaced most of my front end, had an alignment and new tires put on, but I still have a vibration - loud noise going down the road.

It sounds like I am running on mud tires or something, gets louder the faster I go. It definately feels like a vibration in the right rear, half shaft maybe? I just wanted to check on here before I take it somewhere that wants to charge me an arm and a leg for fixing whatever it is. The sound starts out after about 10mph, gets progressively louder as I accellerate. It pretty much rattles everything in the car. The odd part is that when I am going left in a curve, the sound/vibration completely goes away. I have checked the wheel hubs/bearings and they are fine, but that's about the extent of my mechanical prowess.

Half shaft or driveshaft maybe? Any suggestions?

OK, I will take it in and have that checked. I had the new tires put on and the mechanic at that shop took it for a drive after the alignment and his assessment was a vibration from a CV Halfshaft, but he said he didn't look at it because of course that would cost money. The thing that got me wondering is I only see vibration DS issues at higher speeds from people on here, this is right from the get go at 10mph and on...

U-Joints probably? or are we talking a new DS? Just fishing for possible answers before I take it into the dealership.

my money would be on a wheel bearing issue. there may not be play in the bearing,but it could be getting rough.
i've seen it before on various cars. my reasoning is that you say the noise changes when turning left and sounds like it's coming from the right. when turning left,you are loading the right side bearings,but check both sides for noise not just play.
another item may be the bearings in the rear differential. really need to get it on a rack, put it in drive and listen for the noise. you may be able to pinpoint the exact area of concern that way.
 
Thanks for that, unfortunately I don't have access to a rack, so I suppose that I will just pay the $110 for the diagnostics from Lincoln and have them tell me what it is.
 
$110 for diag? ouch here in bfe tennesse we charge $35 which is half an hour labor,andthat is taken off if we get the repair job!

That's why Chicago area is just insane for this kinda stuff. Unfortunately my best friend and mechanic buddy moved to Arizona a couple years ago so I'm pretty much on my own and have come to only trust my local Lincoln dealer for these types of things.
 
Well, just had it up on jack stands and ran in a min up to 40 mph. No vibrations or noises out of the ordinary that way. Put up the front and got a 2nd opinion from a friend and he says there seems to be alot of play in the front left wheel. I'm gonna go with that first, $70 for the new hub and I am figuring about 2 hours to replace it?

The noise is almost deafening at hiway speeds, just seemed odd that it disappeared on left turns/curves.
 
You could save the money by doing the hub swap. It would cost you about $150 to do both sides...

The Lincoln stealership is going to try to sucker into the $110 for the diagnostics then about $500 to fix what's not wrong and $500 to fix what is wrong.
 
if you felt the vibration in the steering wheel,then the front hub is your problem. most rear problems are felt in the seat.

hub bearing noise can and will go away depending on how you turn and which side is bad.
i test them at work by checking for play,listening for roughness by spinning the wheel while the car is in the air,and by driving it and rocking the car from side to side with the steering wheel while listening for the noise.

the front hub you could do yourself without paying the dealership,if you determine that's what's wrong. fairly easy job,the rear is a little more complicated.
 
I can get the part from my local parts place, a Timken for about $60, I searched on here for a writeup on how to do it, but had no luck. Anyone got some quick instructions and I will probably do both fronts tomorrow night if it is that easy...

Thanks again guys, after spending $500+ on tires and alignment, having my furnace repaired last week and buying groceries, I'm all tapped out so self-service it will have to be =)
 
you will need a big ass socket to get the nut holding the hub. i think it's like a 28 mm??? not exactly sure


Someone has to have a bit more of a specific answer. If I go into Sears and tell them I need a big ass socket, I don't think they'll give me the right one. I've been searching since last night trying to find a procedure to do this operation on my car to no avail....... :(
 
Thanks guys, :) I got the hub, new spindlenut and some bearing grease last night, rented a torque wrench and axle nut socket and went home to do the deed. I was wondering what I was gonna be in for, but it took less than an hour actually. Old spindle nut came off with the socket, no problems and everything else came off. Put the new hub on, reassembled everything to manufacturer torque specs and took her for a drive, PERFECT, no more vibration/noise.

I can't beleive that for something that took me a little under an hour the shops were quoting me $300 labor + parts.

Glad you got it fixed.

I hate paying a shop to do something I can do myself....plus you know it was done right when you do it. :)
 
Tonight I have to fix the leak that has crippled my blower motor...I think it's gonna be more complicated than the damn wheel hub was.
 
Vibration/noise

I am working on my wheel hub with the same problem as yours and I have everything off and ready to reinstall and I am pickup up my parts today and was wondering were did you get the new spindle nut?
