I have a 2000 lincoln ls v6 with 124,250 miles on it. The car seems to have problems shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear and going into reverse. If I were to floor the pedal, the car will over-rev and take a while to shift into 2nd and 3rd gears. The only way to get it to shift correctly is to wait for the engine to hit the correct RPM, release the gas, and press the gas again and then it will shift into 2nd gear. On top of that, if I were to shift from Drive to Reverse, the whole car jerks right back with just my foot on the brake. Can anyone give me a possible explanation why this is happening?

If I recall it's difficult to do yourself. I think the dealer charges anywhere from 700-1000 to do the solenoid and a transmission flush. If I rememmber correctly.

Wow that's pricey. The guy I took it to said he wanted to rebuild the tranny for $750 and would take about 3 days. With the price he gave me, I'm questioning the quality of his work.

My car did something very similar to yours so I'm guessing. You could try a flush first to see if that solves your problem, but you might end up paying for that twice if you need to replace the solenoid anyway. It is pricey but should only need to be replaced once during the span of which you own the vehicle.

Alright. It's a shame I only owned the car since may and put 2,500 miles on it and now I have this problem.

Oh. Sometimes I experience a delay when shifting from drive to reverse or park and reverse. I'd release my foot from the brakes, press the gas and the engine revs for a second or two then it will engage into reverse with the grinding jerk backwards. Is that also part of the solenoid problem or could it be something else?

IMHO, DEFINITELY solenoid pack. It can be done in your garage, but it is a bugger. I did it on a lift andit still took (IIRC) 3ish hours; and I ended up having the dealer do a flush afterwards as I was skeptical I had the correct amount of fluid. Alldata says 2.1 hours labor.

I got a quote to change the solenoid pack with new filter and fluid from my Lincoln dealer, and it was something like 950 bucks out the door. Waiting on them to tell me if that's what is needed.

I went today to my dad's mechanic that he has been going to since we owned our first car back in the late 80's. He hasen't personally tested my LS, but I asked him how much would it be if I were to give him the parts and have them install it for me. He said he'd install everything for $200 providing that I bring to him the gaskets, tranny fluid and the solenoid. Now where do I begin finding a solenoid pack for cheap?

I do not know the part number, but im sure if you search the forum you can find something. This is a common problem that has been dealt with by countless members on this forum.

Order the solenoid thru the dealer. You dont want to put used parts in your transmission. And, IMO, avoid 800700trans.com. They sell reman solenoids cheap but if you get a bad one they only do exchanges, no refunds and they dont say that anywhere on their site. There are no gaskets needed for this job, the pan gasket is reuseable. The bolt that holds the electrical connector for the solenoid is the worst part of this job. I had to cut a 10mm box end wrench in half to get to the bolt.
