Wonder what I'm doing today?
I just don't know...

lowering, lowering springs?

BTW you're brave hovering your face over a loaded spring.

I would also like to kno how it rides after cutting. And move your face lol

Haha that's actually my buddy doing the cutting. He's done this a few times. The car is almost put back together and then I'm going to clean it up and try to take pics before I go to work.

Awesome you should get us some info on where exactly he cut and how many coils he cut off. I know this isn't the safest option at times but may be the only option to go lower than 1"

Also an update on what the ride is like with your 19"s

We took off a full coil on the front and half a coil on the rear. So lowered the front another inch and rear a little over a half and inch.

Please report back on how the ride is after doing this. I have wanted to do this for awhile now but the negatives of cutting non linear springs outweigh the benefits

pics/info/review? If your successful in not completely destroying the ergonomics of the car I will indulge in the cutting wheel action myself.

Are you cutting stock or aftermarket springs? How are you dealing with the fact that the spring is tapered at each end to fit into the strut mount?

Ergonomics? :p

Lol oops its still a little early. Not the word I was looking for haha but you get what I mean. I don't want the drivers feel/response to suffer to badly.

Thats a good question I've thought about that too. I really hope he chimes in somewhat early this morning I'd like to tackle this today haha

I see the results of that here all the time on Civics. The riders look like little bobble-heads driving around. That will ruin the progression of the spring. Spend the cash and get properly engineered lowering springs.

$600 for a set of custom springs. Already have eibachs sitting in the garage but I'm not satisfied with the drop and am hesitant to install them as selling used springs is completely different than new ones.

So you bought a new set of Eibachs, didn't like the drop, and are now cutting the factory springs?

If that's true, I have only one question: Want to sell me the Eibach's? :D

Same here. You can even look at the car and see it bouncing around like it's got no sway bars or shocks almost. Also hear about the springs bending/breaking the seats since they don't have a smooth face to sit on the perch anymore.

He said he only cut off half a coil on the rears too. I dont see how that will seat correctly and not have the possibility of coming out of the perch causing a huge problem. Given that the eibach springs are already significantly shorter then the OEM's if you cut off to much you will need to find new shorter strut too

I was talking about how a lot of springs have the face ground flat so that they will sit squarely on a flat perch. When you cut the springs, you get rid of the ground face, and end up with a majority of the springs pressure pushing in one relatively small area of the perch. Usually ends up bending the hell out of the perch or breaking it. Can also generate a bunch of side load on the strut and bend it or make it wear out prematurely.

See how the ends of the spring are ground flat so you end up with almost a half-round of contact area or more against the spring seat? Some spring seats are designed to accept a raw coil, but I do not believe the LS is like that. I am pretty sure the seat/perch they have is a flat cup.

Sorry if we were saying the same thing, but it sounded like we might be thinking something different :)

Ok guys sorry about taking so long to get back with some results, but on the bright side, I've had enough time to drive it around the last few day and see what the difference is in ride and driveability. The verdict... I cannot tell any difference. The car still rides like it did with the Eibachs not cut. I am very pleased with the results and the amount we calculated and cut off to get it right. The LS springs do taper at one end of the spring, but you cut the other end and it sits fine in the top. Also, the springs are not flat on the top like other vehicles, so that was not an issue. All I will say is that I am very pleased with the results and didn't have any issues. But you guys will be doing this at your own risk. BC if you take too much off, there's no going back. And also keep in mind my car has a different engine and transmission in it also, so the amount needed to be cut off the springs might be different on a v6 or v8 factory motor. But enough of the technical crap, here are some pics!

^ Nice I don't think anyone realized you were cutting the Eibach springs. Still need those pics! :)
