Mark VIII Hillbilly

My '95 Mk VIII's engine seems as strong and smooth as it's been for the 80k miles and 11 years I've owned the car.
However, the car seems to "labor" more, especially uphill, than I remember it doing when it was younger. It seems to take a little more pedal, and to be a bit noisier as it works harder than I like. (I always enjoyed the ghostly silent surge.)
So I'm wondering if the transmission is slipping, or not shifting as crisply as it should, or has become otherwise somehow inefficient.
The cheerful charlatans who have been soaking me every time they work on the car tell me only a Lincoln dealer can evaluate this – "checking the computer" or somesuch. But I've never found a Lincoln dealer who didn't find at least 500.00 worth of something to bill me for every time they see the car. (Because if I can afford a Lincoln, my money doesn't matter to me, right?)
So I haven't had it checked.
But that brings me to the chips-n-tuning discussions I've seen referenced here on LvC. I've never ventured into high-tech tuning – mainly because when the Mark is running right, it's all the car I have any business driving.
But what kinds of tweaks are available for the '95, and what would they do for me?
Thanks.
