Turbo Mark VII Time

Decided to gut the dash since it weighs 100lbs, even with just the steel structure left, its still a tanks worth of weight. I think it needs to be made out of a composite of some sort.

Tonight's musical motivation:

I decided to fill in all the holes that are found in the engine bay of this platform and with that, I realized I need to fire up the weld I got for Christmas years and years ago that I never touched. It's your average Harbor Frieght Fluxcore box but, that should be more than enough for this project. I had some spare metal laying around from other projects so I decided to make a few test passes to see what I can do and how bad I am.

I have no real idea what Im looking at here. I know the splatter is just a by product of Fluxcore stuff and, i know I was starting to get decent beads to lay down but, past that. It looks like Greekaphilgy.

First attempt:

Attempt 1 was to weld the bent steel the the steel plate. The top weld was my most recent on that attempt and, where I turned up the speed the wire. Clearly, the top weld was the best one there. The weld to the right was a test past to see how the wire speed increase actually worked when applied to metal.

Second attempt:
Cut out a small piece and weld it to create a little wall. That didnt turn out well, trying to weld that little piece with no means of holding it up resulted in burning through (lower left corner) and just really sloppy looking welds. Not being happy, I took a 5lb mini sledge and bent it over and as you can see, it held. Then I tried to weld it down while filling the gap that is obviously left with that type of bend. After that, I just decided to make a few lines that resemble letters or snakes.

This may hurt some but, all of the connectors are cut off and all of the wiring from the car is ready to go to the metal recycler.

Well, I am officially not a welder but at least I didn't burn the place down and the welds hold the weight of me. Just need to do some trimming so the turbo fits into the core support and can be bolted to the turbo holder pedestal thinger. Soon, I'll have no choice but to finish cleaning up the engine bay.

In other news, I didn't burn the car or garage down tonight. The welds are ugly and no where near good but, they didn't break with repeated hard blows with a hammer. I'll take that as a plus. I burnt through a few times, figured out how to not blow through the new and old metal.

Got the car home today and started the process of cleaning up the tubing and painting it. After that is done, it'll be time to get the engine bay coated, primed and painted then...Build a rear end perhaps?

The cage is doing its week long curing thing so, I toss the seat back into it and started to get ready to tackle the engine bay. I'll be doing the wheel house/upper rails in satin black over Por15 and the engine bay in the factory metallic gray once its stripped and coated. I am debating on if I want to fill the holes or not. It's not a show car and, all it really would do is add that extra pound of weight.

I also need to figure out a dash. The factory dash does not clear the dash bar and would need to be cut to let the bar come through. The idea for a Mustang dash has been with me for a while now, just to make saving the weight easier and mounting a Racepak.

I put one more coat of Por15 down on everything that matters. I'll let that cure out for a day or two then spray the wheel hose in that roll cage paint, to make it satin black and prime the engine bay, to get it ready for color.

Figuring out the order to bolt all this crap together sucked but, the brake pedal, booster, steering column and all that jazz is finally in the car for good. Though, now I see just how dirty everything has gotten.

The camber/caster plates came in today so, I had to toss them on to see what they look like. I also tossed on the mock up Strange struts since they didn't fit the stock strut mounts. All I know now is, full droop is what ride height use to be.

Holy shit, I made something! I mean, it's complete crap but, you have to start at crap to make it up to garbage...right?

Got the Flaming River rack in the other day so, that got tossed into the car and, I made the steering shaft. It looks like I need to go to the store and get another set of outer tie rods for this rack. When I de-powered the factory rack, I switched over to all SN95 stuff and this rack, uses Fox based parts. I should have read up a bit more before assuming it would all go together magically.

Put the new outer tie rods on, tightened up all of the suspension for the first time and set it down. I may need to put Fox length control arms on up front, to suck the wheels in a bit more.

A radiator about the size I needed, popped up for sale on the other side of the state so, I had to go get it. I made up a quick bracket and, to make RaceStatus happy, I didn't paint it black. Rather, it got painted body color. I still need to make up something to fully secure the bottom of the radiator but, that can be done tomorrow.

It is tempting to cut out the bracket and make it hollow in the middle. It would be more for looks than anything since, it already weighs nothing. Also, I need to get a bolt that what I had laying around.

What K-member application did you use? I know Team Z but was it for a SN-95 mustang? If so how well did it bolt in?

It is for a SN-95 with, SN-95 arms. It bolted in great but, being SN-95 specific, the rear bolt holes are further back and needed to be elongated towards the front of the car. It also needed 3/8" spacers due to the upper frame rails being on a different plane compared to the Mustang.
 
I dig it... It sits just about right and should be perfect when the drive train, fuel system, etc is in. What are your plans for the motor/trans?
