I have a 1997 mark VIII and wanted to know what the usual price for a major tune-up, spark plugs, coils, coil packs and anything else that would need to be changed. Any answers would be appreciated. thanks

Oh yeah 1 more thing lately my engine has been making that gargling noise more frequently, like whenever i start the car, come off the highway and slow down. i know it has to do with oil draining or something like that but its driving me crazy what can i do about it?

1. price your needs at Rockauto.com

2. Its your air compressor running, leveling out your system.
Check the search tab for more info.

You should also change the fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, and IAC valve, maybe not all at once but eventually.

im pretty sure its the engine here the info.

What's the clattering noise I hear when I start my car? It goes away after a few seconds.

This is common on the Mark VIII, and is caused by oil leakdown, causing the secondary cam tensioners to rattle. The 'fix' from Ford costs about $1200, and requires serious disassembly of the front of the motor. While annoying, it typically will not cause damage. Installation of a pre-oiler will stop this, and some have had luck with various oils and anti-drainback filters.

Those are 2 different things.

The cam tensioner makes a knocking/tapping noise. And it only happens when you first start the car, after it's been off for at least a few hours.

The suspension compressor makes more of a deep buzzing noise. The car lowers itself when parked and when you exceed 55 mph, so that's why you hear it raising the car at startup and when you get off the highway. It usually runs for about 20 seconds or so.

i see what your talking about but this noise isnt a deep buzzing noise its a deep loud gargling noise., could the compressor be going bad or is this just normal, cause i heard the compressor before and the two noises are completely different and its been getting more loud and annoying lately

Sounds like the rubber compressor mounts are probably shot, the 'gargling' is probably the compressor vibrating around against the mounting tabs and bolts that hold it in.

Mine did that for a long time, then got REALLY F'G BAD one day, for two cycles, as I was running errands. I come out from the second errand and it finally decided it wouldn't attempt to run anymore.

You know what, start your car, throw it in reverse quick, throw it back in park, walk around and put your head down between the turn lamp and tire. See if it's coming from right behind your fender.

ok ill check it tomorrow but two weeks ago i changed my brakes and the bags went down all the way then i restarted the car and watched and heard the bags fill up and didnt hear the sound, everybody that hears it says its coming from the engine

Weird.

If segxr7 isn't right, someone else is gonna have to help you out on that.

When you come off the highway like you were talking, the only real possibility would be your compressor.

yeah im going to have to stop by a ford dealership and see what they say, and it also happens when im cruising not even doing 55 man i hope its nothing serious

Well. Don't go to a ford dealer. They don't know anything about these cars. Seriously.

You're better off taking it to the towns best repair shop. Especially when it comes to your wallet.

If we can't help you find your problem, they're going to have probably more of a problem finding your problem.

Too bad you don't live close to another member that could give some decent input. You do, probably. But, if you knew another member that was close already that has been around these cars for awhile.

FYI .. there's not many things on these engines that have problems. These engines are good at running just about forever.

Thanks man the info was helpful, theres a repairshop here in town called oval repair thats works on nothing but fords, lincolns, etc ill take it there and see what they say

Well give an update when you find out what it is, so at least I can learn. Lol. :)

Good luck.

HI :waving: ford tech for 8 years. it depends on how they look at it, a car is a car, just we got some extra goodies

the prob stated poss coolant related like boiling over? what color is the coolant? poss flushed before sale, it was flushed improperlly causing an air pocket? just throwing out ideas

Sounds like a water pump

If your hearing a boiling sound like you speak of when you come of the highway. It sounds like your bottle that you add your anti-frezze to or a air bubble in your coolant system. Please keep us posted on your conclusion for future references. Good Luck!!

ford tech for 6 years.

depends on the dealer and the tech that gets the job.

i agree and dont agree on the ford dealer thing ..i been goin to my LINCOLN mercury stealrship/service dept for a long time say appx,10 yrs for basic oil changes and if something isnt right or the car acts up-even for the intermittion crap while im there i'll ask them to check it out, give me their anyalisis and or quote, and if i can afford to do it their at there price ill get it done,or ill take that info and get the work done somewhere else! shopping around is good !
now since my l/m stealership isnt here in the town anymore-all their lincoln cars and lincioln teckies have been given to our nearest ford dealership and service---this is something to think about.mechaincs at ford knows thing about lincoln cars,i have boughten parts for my lsc at ford for appx 10yrs while owning lincolns---reason their prices are by just a few dollars -like bouncin from linc to ford when i need something..lincoln cars use ford products or mastercraft part...right?

i am most certain if you go to your ford dealership/parts dept ask for a stupid part for you lincoln make n model-im certain they will give you stock info, even print out of your part(s) like diagram form!

Personally I take the advice of the LvC Lincoln owners over the techs or mechanics.

When it come to the Lincoln Mark VIII I've found more educated people on the Mark VIII here than at any dealership or shop. Also for me LvC is batting 1.000....

Every issue that I've had has been solve right here in the Mark VIII forum. Saved me a lot of money...
