Tube that goes to EGR valve question

This darn thing is leaking at the flex joint and it's driving me nuts! I can see that it's leaking there but can't reach it with both hands to try to stop the leak. What will happen if I undo the nut holding that EGR tube to the exhaust and then simply put a cap on it? Will this mess with emissions or make the car run poorly? I just don't want to tear all of the stuff off to remove the pipe right now. Thanks.

I have deleted the EGR on all my cars but I am in a non-emissions tested area "Hillbilly...haha" so it makes no matter legally in that respect.

No it will not cause ill effect in the running of the car. You will probably get a CE light though because there will be no return gas for the sensor to measure. But the CE can be turned off with a performance chip.

So...If you can get away with it in your area then GUT the system IMO and get you a custom SCT tune or something similar and have them turn ignore the EGR signal.

There should be no performance gain from deleting EGR. It will in fact lead to an overall increase in engine/cyl temperature.. Just replace the pipe when you can get to it.

This is the general purpose of EGR "Lower cyl. temps at part throttle & cruise" but...In scanning my temps I see no differances at all. I don't doubt the science but I doubt the system and its effectivness. There are some new eng. platforms that don't even use an EGR system...Sooooo I don't completely buy it.:)

It may lower CYLINDER temps, but NOT overall engine much, in fact it raises intake manifold temps.
 
Well, I just decided to change the egr tube. What a total PITA!!! this was. Now that I have done it next time wouldn't be so bad. Anyways, now that the egr tube isn't leaking anymore and I put a new CID (camshaft postion sensor) in she is running like a champ! Better MPG also!

To change the egr tube you have to remove the hood, cowl/windshield wiper motor and wiper arms and linkage. After that's out of the way it's easy to access.
 
I got it at my local ford dealer (Gaudin Ford) THEY SUCK! It was $130.00 bucks!!! I could have got it from 5 star ford or Team ford for around $80.00 but I needed it right away since I had to get the car back together and they were the only one who had it in stock.
 
Good job replacing the EGR tube. I've done it before and it's not a fun job.

I discovered a trick when I did mine. I just disconnected my hood struts and was able to raise the hood higher with a prop rod (broom handle). You have to watch the corners of the hood, you can only raise it so far before the corners will hit, but it was easier than removing the hood (I did that before too).

I also noticed a great increase in fuel mileage when I got the EGR system working again.
 
Ive done it and got my egr tube at the dealer for 65 dollars.... worst damn thing i ever did... makes me hate fords a lot....
 
Why the flex pipe in the middle anyways? If it were solid then it would have never leaked! Oh well, just another bit of ford for ya!
