Ive been thinking about it alot latly. I really really really dislike this 5r55N transmission in the LS V8. Will a 5r55S from a mustang GT work with the LS motor?

heres my reasoning, 2nd and 3rd gear ratios in the 5r55N are nothing short of retarded, 2nd goes by so fast when daily driving it honestly feels like the transmission gets confused or slips extremly bad to me. i really just tired of it.

5r55n
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th
3.25 2.44 1.55 1.00 0.75

5r55s
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th
3.22 2.29 1.55 1.00 0.71

It just seems to me that the slight changes in the 5r55S transmission that it would be alot nicer to drive when in traffic. 2nd wont go by and seem pointless to me.

another Upside is the aftermarket is alot better for the 5r55S as well. also maintence is easier.

Any ideas or opinions?

Someone might be able to do it, but if you're asking the question, it's not you. ;)

Seriously, the problem isn't mating the tranny to the AJ (the 5R55S was originally mated to the 2nd Gen LS's 3.9), it's the different engine control systems. The 1st Gen LS is ODBII, but the 5R55S is designed to be controlled by a CAN PCM. ILLS or Torrie might be able to write you a custom tune to deal with that, but it isn't going to be cheap or easy (though very few things that are worthwhile are either cheap or easy).

Besides, the 5R55S may not be such an upgrade from the 5R55N...

well according to some calculators..

60 should come a bit faster... about 3 tenths of a second. 100 should come faster by only 1 tenth of a second.

RPMS at 70mph drop as well.

but who really knows how the powerband of the first gen 3.9L v8 would do to the different gearing.

2nd is alot more noticeable though, i was just messing around on forza and input the gear ratios. 5r55N 2nd goes by fast and then the rpms drop in 3rd to a dead spot (pretty realistic!!) in the 5r55s they tend to flow more smoothly between 1st 2nd and 3rd. who knows if the date is useful though considering i wasnt driving an LS, and you know the fact that its a video game!

I think the second and third are not bad, it's the first that is too long. My 01 V6 shifts to 2nd at about 45 and to third at about 57 then to forth at about 90, so if the first would be have been up to 35 or so, the car would have been much faster off the line.

i dont have a problem with first gear. its 2nd thats just like..what the hell? why am i only in a gear for 12 mph?

60 would come quicker mainly becuase the transmission isnt shifting to 3rd right befor 60mph.

but...then again...who races to 60mph?

In my eyes, it wouldnt be a bad swap if perhaps my transmission blew up. technically lower your 0-60 time, Lower rpms on the highway would mean better fuel economy. and just the fact that i know i have a 2nd gear lol. But i dont think its worth it to go out and do it when the trans is fine.

seems like a lot of money for the smallish improvement.

likely in the minority here - but I actually like the non-synchronous N over the S - there is a lot less potential for a rpm flare between shifts (causing something to break) and it uses direct clutches over upgraded bands and smarter technology.

but...then again...who races to 60mph?

it was probably for pulling onto the highway quickly. i dont mind it but whoever said first hangs around too long is right. even with the nitrous, it seems to take forever (but at least you dont spin em) and it probably just makes the short 2nd feel all that much shorter.
