Transmission noise just noticed.

While in a drive thru last night I heard what sounded like the fuel pump whinning a little so I put the car in neutral and it stopped.

Put it back in Drive there it was again. Put the car in 3rd no whine.
Same for 1st and second... But regular "D" and it sounds like a selonoid
maybe going?

I also notice that 9/10 when I put the car in D4 the dash wont read 4
just 5th still...

Any thoughts?

Do you have the standard shifter? I have the D5/D4 problem. There's just an electrical switch that tells the computers you moved to D4, and the switch is gummed up.

No idea on the tranny noise, though. Maybe try to check your fluid level first.

Standard shifter. (I'll try to de-gum it. Where did you start? inside the car from the top?)

Level is good.

Take off the console cover, remove shifter knob, pull up on shifter top plate. It'll snap out, but be careful. Can break the mounts. You'll see the switch under the plate. Take it out and clean it up.
