Im new to posting on the forum but been hanging out for a while now. Received tons of useful info on here. Thanks guys, hopefully someone will be able to guide me in the right direction with my issue.
So heres the deal-a few months ago I got on it a little too heavy on the freeway in my 2000 ls V8 and had a really hard down shift. After it happened I lost all gears in auto mode, just revs like its in neutral. I made it off the freeway and found that manual mode "somewhat" worked. No reverse at all.
When Im in manual, its starts off in D2 (not sure if thats normal or not) then there is a 5 second delay from D2 to D3. D3 thru D5 shifts fine in manual mode of course.
So being in college and not having extra cash for a new tranny, I drove it for a few months in manual mode. Heres where things get crazy....So my water pump went out. Replaced it but for the next few days kept overheating because I didnt properly bleed the system. during all these heating spells my reverse and auto mode miraculously came back to life, albeit i had some hard shifts but everything was working. As soon as it was operational again i started getting the check tranny message, never had the message when it wasnt working correctly....weird huh?
Well I got the overheating issue taken care of and a few days later it was back to no reverse, manual mode only. The error message disappeared at this point. Then about a month later I lost 5th. A week later lost D2. A few days after that tranny quit all together.
Funny thing is, when it went out all together, if i turned my car on and off several times D3 and D4 would begin to work. This lasted a day or so and the trick hasnt worked since. No gears at all, it like neutral when i shift out of P.
My question is, does this sound like a valve body or solenoid block issue or both, or something totally different?
My first line of attack was check for low or no tranny fluid. When I opened the level check plug in the drain plug I got about 3 qts of fluid out. I found this very strange indeed! When I took the rest of the drain plug out I got about another 4 qts of fluid which was pretty black btw. Would having the front end up on jack stands cause fluid to leave the oil cooler and fill the pan with extra fluid? Could a failed pump cause this?
The bottom of the pan had no chunks of metal or anything, just some really fine stuff on the magnet.
At this point Ive pulled the filter, valve body and reverse servo. I have that one PITA bolt atop the solnoid pack holding me up for now.
ANY help or feedback is much appreciated! Again, any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
