I had mentioned last week about my display saying "Check Transmission" and my cruise control not working. I thought they were related but the cruise was a different problem.

Anyway the car gave me the warning again today and I hit the reset button. What I didn't notice was that the OD idiot light was flashing as well. IDK if it did last time nor do I know if it was flashing before I hit the reset button because my cell phone sits perfectly there but blocks the lights.

So anyway after I hit the reset button and noticed the OD light was constantly flashing I got curious and hit the OD button. Car down shifted to 3rd with no noise or jerkiness at all. Pressed it again and the car went into 4th nice and smoothly too. I pulled over and checked the fluid in neutral and park. Both times it was 3/4 up on the "hot" area, no smell or foaming.

The car shifts perfectly all the time, very smooth at part throttle and crisp and firm at WOT. No slipping or hesitation, never hunts for gears and always goes into drive or reverse quickly and with no noise or clunk.

I checked the VSS and did not see any burned wires or a loose plug. I checked the rear speed sensors and they were tight and clean plus I don't get random traction or ABS warning lights. The front wheel speed sensors were filthy and I cleaned them. I know they are magnetic but there was solid gunk between each "tooth" so I figured it couldn't hurt to clean them up.
I don't think the front wheel speed sensors have anything at all to do with the transmission but in the off chance they would cause a speed reading error I cleaned em anyway.

The trans has not been serviced in 25K miles though. Do you guys think thats all my problem is or is there something else I can check? Do you know if an Autozone reader (the one they use to check for you) will also display what the issue may be for the trans or does theirs only give the codes for "check engine" lights?

how would u go about fixing that issue my od buttons nbot working peroid and i wish it was but i havent driven my car in 3 months and com to find out that the battery was completely drained

If it set a Pxxxx code, it may or may not pull it. My autozone reader will on mine. If the check engine light is off, chances are it won't.

Yeah, thats kinda what I figured.
The three times its done it the only commonalities I have noticed is the car was running for 30 miles of driving and then about 5-10 minutes of idling in 100* weather. After the idling the first time the car has a chance to get into 4th again is when the error triggers.
Does the car have a thermal sensor for the trans fluid? I would really like some ideas before throwing stuff at it and see what sticks. I guess I could start off with a trans service. I thought it was good for 45K but it seems 30K is the recommendation and its been about 25K since it was done. If that does not do it then I don't know what next. I can get a trans cooler and was planning on doing one anyway but since I cant find a thread with this problem I would assume that temp is not the problem either. Some of you live in hotter places and don't have an aftermarket cooler.

I wonder if the VSS or a WSS is going bad when it heats up?

Well I guess I am gonna order one then. Prolly just order the BBK or something similar. I know there are threads on it but since I already started this one I just cut off the fittings on the lines going into the rad and cap off the rad holes (anyone know the correct plug size?) and then connect the hose that the kit comes with to where I cut the fittings off, right?

Mine did the same thing and the codes I got were for the TCC solenoid. Might want to get the codes read.

Well I am gonna order the B&M big trans cooler next week. It seems like the best unit with the lowest pressure drop and most effecient design. I found one for $68 shipped new. They have a couple that are about $20 cheaperbut I want the largest one I can fit and dont want a tube/fin design because I understand it may cause pressure issues with electronic transmissions.

Anyone else running the B&Ms?

there was a thread that ray started whcich showed you, how to replace/repair that broken wire for the od button.it was a write up for a GEN 1 mark viii or does it matter

Was what the fix? What fixed that problem was seperating the two wires that were touching coming off the VSS plug. The trans fluid had eaten the jacket off and the wires were shorting out.

Not on my car, but on my truck,.....running factory trans cooler first, aux.trans cooler secondary. I figured why not use both?

Also, when replacing the OD wire I'd suggest a little trick: (without the black plastic PRND21 thingy installed BUT with the shifter knob installed) you'll see where the wire coming out of the shift boot has a bad curve on it, put several drops of crazy glue on the curve and allow to dry first without laying it down on the metal, this will keep that curve from cracking for awhile while going through the gears.

I got the "check transmission" and the OD light flashing......... Im tryna find out if the leak I got at the transmission dipstick o-ring the cause. Maybe a pressure sensor detecting weak pressure idk.
