I think my transmission is trashed. Its had the classic solenoid problem for the past couple weeks but its been drivable. Today it wouldnt go into reverse and when i go forward there is a horrible sound.

I think im gonna just go with a remanufactured tranny. Does the torque conv. need replacing too or can the old one go back in? WHat work would be involved by the dealer if i buy my own rebuilt tranny and just have them install it? Car is stuck in parking lot and will have to get towed home tonight. Need to figure out what to do quick. Thanks

Can't this be fixed with just replacing the solenoid pack?

I was under this same impression. I'm no expert when it comes to trannies(of either variety) but if you think you have the problem part nailed down why replace the whole beefalo instead of just the ~$2-300 part that's causing the issues. Unless of course you've whipped the tranny real bad in general.

I had the same problem with my 2000 ls v8 about the same time last year. I lugged it home barely but then it wouldn't shift into any gears and when it did, it jerked and made loud clanking noises. towed to transmisson shop, he rebuilt it in house. Showed me the ol prts and the sprag gear was trashed. Cost me about 3500 to rebuild it in house with upgraded parts, about the same it would cost to put in a remanufactured.

Had mine replaced about 3 years ago under extended warranty by local ford dealer transmission and labor 2800.00 and every thing is good. Mine would not go into any gears. Extended warranty has been well worth it on this car so far they have paid out over 6000.00 in repairs

I would not get it fixed at a dealer, go to a reputable shop and price a remanufactured tranny this way u get a different trans and not rebuild yours.

If u you really want OEM then buy the trans at the dealer and have a reputable shop install it.

If you have nasty noise coming from it, this means parts inside the transmission are trashed, so for sure you metal shavings all over the internals.

i have seen many transmissions apart with bad hard parts and it is not pretty.

you MUST install a new or rebuilt torque converter

Tasca sells rebuilt online for 2.1K after core return for 1K. Shipping might be pricey but I would guess that this is what the dealer would install. Try and get a quote from Max.

And (if there was metal circulating) you must completely flush the transmission cooler and lines. The service manual also says to install an external filter in line with the transmission cooling lines (on the return line I think).

I think the cheaper and easier way is to try to replace part for part. But my LS is now 7 years old and has 173k miles on the original tranny. I think i got my money's worth out of it. The dealer wants $2900 total to replace old tranny with a new remanufactered one. My service advisor warned me of replacing parts with that many miles. He said the new tranny included torque converter and comes shipped with fluid, which i have read is important. Along with the peace of mind with having a ford dealer install an oem part, it comes with a 3 yr/unlimited mile warranty.

I think it just comes down to the fact that the LS has been paid off for awhile now and i'd rather spend the money getting the LS to run good than shop for a new car. My wife thinks im crazy paying that much, but my dad paid $1500 for a used tranny installed on his old ford taurus. Right now im driving it knowing i could be stuck on the side of the road anytime, figure if im replacing the whole thing then i cant do any worse damage to it. Planning on getting the repair done next friday (payday). So i just need it to last another 5 or so days.

That sucks because i just got a complete flush a couple weeks ago.

dude dont rebuild the tranny its a wast of time and too much money, to save yourself a lot of money call LKQ they deal with used transmission and engines and other automobile parts. Ask them the price of a used ls transmission. They do a compression test on the trans and make sure its good before they sell it to you and it also comes with a one year warranty unless you extend it further. After that find a reputable place and ask them to just take your old one out and replace it with the one you got from LKQ intotal you will probably spend about 1300 maybe.

The problem i see with that is six months ago my tranny was fine, if my car was sitting in a yard then LKQ could of pulled my transmission and said it was ok, only to have it fail six months later. $1300 is way too much im my opinion for "used" parts. Especially with something as important and technical as the transmission. I have the extra $$ so i'd feel much better paying the $2900 and have peace of mind that if ANYTHING goes wrong after the install it will go back to the dealer and i'll be driving a free rental until its resolved.
